This is going to sound stupid but I recently tried to change the oil in my 96 Vulcan and everything went well (especially like the location of the oil filter) until I couldn't get the drain plug loose no matter how hard I tried. The ratchet eventually stripped around the bolt and I stopped messing with it. Is my only option vise grips or God forbid....go to a LUBE PLACE?

Try the vice grips. If that doesn't work, I've heard of people drilling through the head of the plug, then sliding something through the head of the bolt and using that to turn it.

Most shops should be able to take it out if you can't.

Either way, when you get the new plug, don't go ape-s*** when tightening it from now on.

Try using a pipe wrench if the vise grip doesnt work.

If you get a big enough pipe wrench you should be able to produce enough torque to get it loose.

Also, double check the direction youre turning. When I first started doing my own work on my car I thought I was loosening it when I was tightening it

I lived and learned

Ya know they sell rounded bolt sockets..... I have a set of craftsman impact grade rounded bolt removers. If you wanted to go that route they have a set of 'em for $20, if this link works..... sears product link
I've had pretty good luck with these... well the impact ones. I plan on getting the set from snapon because they have a larger set. Good luck!

Just to clear it up so you don't think I did this to myself....this is my first time changing the oil on this car so some other idiot besides me (hehe) tightened it up like that. I just bought a pipe wrench to get it loose. Thanks for all your help guys. This forum is great.

LOL

As a matter of fact that began to leak oil right before I was going to do the change....hence my changing it already. I guess it wasn't put on tight enough and the plug put on too tightly. I suspect a lube place....which is why I'm not a huge fan of them at all.
