My son took the Sable out of state. He had the oil changed at 115,000 and had the place use regular dino oil. He drives about 8 miles to work one way about half of it on the highway, the rest is about 35mph.

He's driven about 1,500 miles in the past three months, so he's asking if he should switch to the 3 month schedule instead of 3,000 miles.

I told him that I would change it at the 3 month mark due to the fact that the engine really doesn't get that hot to burn out the junk in the oil.

Car is a 2000 Sable with the 3.0 Duratech motor.

Thanks for any opinions.

Tell him he needs to get out for a good drive at least once a month, and not just for the sake of the oil. 3 month schedule is a good idea with that kind of (non)use. I would consider switching to a semi-synthetic for higher mileage engines also. The Duratec is an awesome engine.

8 miles? I'm guessing it's running for a good 15 minutes total - that should be warm enough for regular trips (have him look at the temp gauge to confirm).

I would not waste extra cash changing the oil every 1500 miles on 10 year old Sable, but that's just me. If something goes it'll most likely be the tranny, not the motor...

The oil you get at cheap oil change places is usually meant to last only 3 months. For about $5-$10 more, most will give you synthetic blend oil which is rated for at least 5000 miles/5 months. But then, honestly, sometimes I don't trust that service. They have gotten so many things wrong so many times.. how do I know they remembered to pour semi-synthetic instead of their usual house oil?

Oil these days is a lot better than it used to be. One guy suggested changing ONLY the filter every 3k miles, and just topping off as necessary. I may try that with my Taurus once I get it running. $20 says it outlives my ownership...

Most oil change places offer a synthetic blend oil for $5-10 more than the regular oil price. Synthetic blends last 5-6 months. The only issue with synthetic blends is .. how do you know that they actually have put a synthetic blend into your car instead of regular oil? Many oil change places rush and do such sloppy work. Many have forgotten about my car, forgot to remove old gaskets, missed obvious problems with suspension as indicated by uneven tire wear patters. Last time I changed oil at Midas and I paid $5 to have synthetic blend. Well, they still wrote on my window sticker that oil needs to be changed after 3000 miles. Now, did they do it because they forgot that they put synthetic blend into my engine, or is it because they forgot to put synthetic blend instead of regular cheap stuff that lasts for only 3 months? I don't know..

We have been using FULL synt. for the past 10-12 years with excellent results. An F-150 V8 with 250K, 3.3 Caravan 230K, 2001 Duratec Taurus 150K, Focus ZX4 Duratec 2.0 62k and my current three Taurus Duratecs with 80 on down, all seem very happy with that. I use a Fram extra Guard filter from walmart and change the oil every 10-12 thousand. This is about half highway and half city miles. None of these cars use any oil and I like only having to change twice a year. I agree the owner that posted that he drives only 8 miles and 15 minutes should put in a few long drives once in a while and 'burn the cobs out' once in a while. And why not change your own oil if you can? It only takes a wrench, oil drain pan and some paper towels and you put in what you want, when you want and know the jobs done right.

I know the topic was "oil change opinions ", but after reading the above posts, and in light of a receint investigation of filters on my part (on the www, You Tube "Fram Oil Filters" (scary!)and other web pages), How do you guys feel about the K&N, Wix Filters? I know OEM should be the way to go, but in a pinch, What do you guys think??
Would Love to hear you thoughts on that Topic.

1st Dino oil is so old school. You need to treat your Duratec with a much better oil, at a minimum Motorcraft 5w-30 semi-synthetic and change the oil every 5K miles.

Motorcraft semi-synthetic is found very reasonably priced at most Walmarts. And while your at Walmart pick-up a Motorcraft oil filter as well.

20-25 Years ago I use nothing but Motorcraft on my Mustang Cobra and Mustang GT. Fram was a joke. Thanks to the posts above the queasy feeling on Fram is back. Motorcraft filters are probably back for me. But with the original question on this thread what are some of the problems with full Syn? My '95 Excort and Focus were used the same way, 15 minutes and eight miles with an oil change every 8-10 thousand miles. Someone else owns the Escort now and it still doesn't use oil, even at 165,000. My cars were garaged and driven frequently.

Nothing wrong with K&N other than it's kind of expensive for what it does. Wix filters are fine. Honestly you can't go wrong with any brand oil filter unless it was made by Honeywell (Fram, Autolite, Pennzoil).

I would agree with his statement. I'm using a fleetguard filter currently, last time I had a mobil 1, then before that I had a few motorcrafts and so on. I don't use fram, unless it's free.

I have a 2001 SEL that goes 30,000 miles or 1 year between oil changes. I have used Amsoil and filter her whole life. I have also flushed the engine every 100,000 miles, she now has 221,000 miles and is not using oil.
