Hi everyone, new on the board. I will be picking up my Taurus next week, and even though it's being bought as a "winter beater" (sorry sorry sorry), I do plan on taking good care of it.

Plus, being from the Mustang side of the hobby, like they say, if it ain't broke, modify it!

So, what are my options? The K&N filter is already ordered and I've read the article on removing the air silencer (can't believe I need to take the wheel off). After those 2 very basic mods, what am I looking at?

Thank you for any suggestions.

And yes, I WILL change my avatar as soon as I take a picture of the Taurus.

Well, first of all.... Welcome to your new home away from home. Welcome to The Taurus Car Club of America!!!

Now, you must first realize that the onsetting addiction to this site is understood by all. Just stand up and say.." Hi, I am Philippe, and I am a TCCA addict."

Ok, now on with your request, everyone will have a different suggestion on next mod. I would suggest sending Bob a PM about getting a TCCA decal, so that you may properly "represent"
. Next I would decide on what you are looking for, performance, handling, looks, sound. Then look through the forums for the mod area you want. If you still haven't found any ideas, or get lost, just ask anyone on the board or head over to the chat room and ask in there. We are all eager to help people and are all very approachable.

Mmmm, Duratec...

Chip it! Talk to Viper (if he ever gets back into the TCCA grove), he has his 99Duratec running around 15 in the quarter mile (impressive for the amount of work he's had done)
I think you mean Venom

Welcome to the
. As was said before, you can do quite a bit to the taurus depeding on what you want. Performance options for the duratec are a bit more easily found. Check out http://www.draxas.com for a real CAI. They're also devloping a high-flow Y pipe. Other than that, you can get a chip, and a UDP. There are a few other things you can do depending on what you want. Browse the forums and search a bit. I'm sure you'll be surprised what you can do to that beater

If you're used to the amount of Mustang mods expect to be dissapointed with what is available for the Taurus, in all honesty. That doesnt mean you cant make it a little quicker and sound a little meaner. Since you have stock duals I would get a coupel nice quality muffs and nice tips, aCAI with cone filter and if it looks like it hast got new plugs in awhile chnage those out.

A chip will help it shift better, but I noticed zero power gain with mine and the stiff shifts got tiresome when I just wanted to drive normally.

Oh, and 5.0 SN95's = teh

Post some pics!!

Welcome to the club!!!!
For the air intake mod, you do not need to remove the wheel at all. Just work around it thats all. Good luck and enjoy your new ride.

I've found that while the Taurus/Sable doesn't make the best performance car it will make one hell of an audio system car. There's all sorts of **** that you can find to make it blow away all the rice in the sound performance department.

BTW, Welcome to the club and prepare to become addicted...

Thank you for all the warm welcome!

Troper 8 - I know about the addiction. I've been a member of the Corral.net for over 4 years now. Started with a 1987 5.0L TBird that I brought to Mustang GT specs (engine and handling). I'm sure this board is full of people very willing to counsel me on how to completely blow the grocery money on that one unique aftermarket part!

Adam B. - Thanks about Draxas. They are now in my favorites. On the subject of CAI kits, anybody make a filter-in-fenderwell version of those kits? And, y-pipes? I haven't looked underneath yet, but since you are talking y-pipe, I guess it isn't a true dual?

biteableniles - What's wrong with my moniker?

jtkz13 - Hey, a brother! Naw, I didn't expect the be able to modify it like the Mustang, and that's not the point, or it won't be a winter beater anymore! Just want to make it a bit more interesting. There is just no way that I can leave a DOHC 4 valves per cyl untouched! When shopping for the car, I noticed the chromed wheels, knew they meant high-end, opened the hood, saw the Duratec 24V script and heard beautiful angel-like music in my head.

sfblacksel - thanks.

slider5634 - Well, it already has the Mach sound system with dash-mounted casette player and factory in-trunk 6 CD changer. So initial outlay of money can be concentrated on livening up the engine a little.

Well, looks like a great bunch here. I think I'll enjoy myself!

Forgot, one more question. Even thought it only has about 65K miles (112K kilometres), I was planning on changing the plugs anyway (fresh start and all that). Does the Duratec requires special plugs?

Thank you.

No special plugs, but try searching for "spark plugs" to get a general view on different brands and estimated costs. The search function is an excellent tool and can save you a fair amount of time.

Good Luck, and of course keep us posted on progress.

I suggest using the MotorCraft double platinums that come from the factory. Whatever you do dont use +4's or any expensive special plug. I tried them and they screwed the idle really bad, and even if they worked fine the cost is not worth it.

Also, I think the Duratec is a low maintenance engine, meaning it doesnt call for a tune-up until 100k miles, but it wont hurt to do it earlier, especially if you arent sure of how the previous owner treated it.

Thank you for the plugs info. And yes I do remember someting about those engines being low maintenance. But the very first thing I do when I get a new used (you know what I mean) vehicle, is to do some maintenance, oil and filters change, etc. Let her warm most intimate oil coat my hands, gently snug that brand spanking new oil filter back in place, so she'll know she found a good considerate lover, errr, owner.

A bit more info on the car?

Well, 1997 LX Sedan. Dark Green (not the "frosty" green) with green cloth interior. Factory chromed mag wheels. Duratec engine with 112K kilometers, Mach sound system with in trunk 6 CD changer, automated climate control thingie with outside temp, floor shifter, power seats, no sunroof. Very very very clean. I'll be picking it up Friday next week (the 20th). $4400 CDN. Which translate to what?, $0.25 USD?

Pics should follow soon. I have a digital camera, so it'll be a piece of cake.

Lol, I was going to tell you to put it in the garage when you got pics, but it looks like you already found it

Sorry, no fenderwell CAI, if you want it, you'll have to fab your own tubing. True duals?
It's a taurus, even with a duratec, you think ford would do that?
