Help! I've broken the black plastic shaft around the key to my husband's 1989 Ford Taurus. I don't drive this car but have seen some kind of key box on the floor to the left of the driver's seat. My husband (who may divorce me over this!) says the key is now useless because of some kind of sensor (transponder???) that was built into the upper part of the key. Please help me understand how the key system for this particular model so I'll have a clue about how to fix. The car belonged to my husband's late stepfather so it has sentimental value.

There is no transponder used with this model. The key on the floor next to the seat is operated by the oval head key.

The keys are purely mechanical.

That key box on the floor locks the gas door and trunk so they cant be opened with the levers on the box.

Just get a new key made at any hardware store for $1.50.
