Need A New Coolant Hose

43410 Views 109 Replies 51 Participants Last post by  The White Falcon
Hey everybody. So yesterday I was flushing out my cooling system. Figured I'd throw in a new t-stat and check over all the hoses while i was at it. (98 Duratec) Pulled off the lower rad hose, noticed it'd been rubbing on the frame and was showing reinforcing threads. So I figured i'd pick up a new one, no big deal (maybe put some wire loom stuff around it or something). Then I figured i'd check out the hose that goes from the t-stat housing up to the water pump. stuck my hand up in there, and realized it's metal. i thought that was kinda goofy for a water pump, but whatever. so i started fondling it a bit to make sure it was allright, and big chunks of crap fell in my face. and sure enough, the pipe just disintegrated in my hands. which is kind of a pain, yeah, but at least I caught it now and not a week from now when i plan on heading down the mass pike on vacation.

so i'll just pick up a couple new hoses right? i wish. autozone, advance, and carquest don't carry replacements. went to the dearlership. 'bout $30 for the lower hose. $160 some for the "inlet hose". say what? for a hose? fordpartsnetwork has it for $140something which is less bad, but still not what i would classify as 'reasonable,' rockauto doesn't seem to have it at all.

so finally getting to the point of all this rambling ... anyone else had to replace this monster, and if so, anyone know how i can avoid getting raped?

If you are looking to purchase an OEM one, dealer is your only option.

Some notes:
1. Use hacksaw to cut old one in half for easier removal.
2. Replace with flex hose from AAP.
3. Bangerang.

That would have been 10 times easier than installing that ridiculous pipe. Wish you had posted the suggestion and pictures sooner.

Hey WagonFreak, what brand is that hose and you got it from advance auto?

I'll be going that route for sure this weekend. Thanks for the info, thats a big help.
I found a ford dealer on the internet in cranston rhode Island that has plenty of the pipe/hose.
$122 for part $11 to ship.part # is f6dz8a567a. Local dealer wants 2 hour labor to install plus $18 for new anti freeze.
After dropping the splash shields myself and looking up at the foward attachment to T/housing, I bit the bullet and had him do it for $212 out the door plus the $133 out my pocket for the hose. It hurt to pay it, but this is one of those jobs that was just to ugly for me and I know I have a steel pipe down by that pulley and the serpetine belt , no mess on my garage floor, plus all of the skin left on my knuckles.
I would post the name of the ford dealer in Rhode Island but I don't want to get in trouble with the forum administrator. The name starts with a T and ends with the letter a. Regulars here will know who it is!

Hi WF and everyone.

Got this all done yesterday using the flex hose. Took about two hours maybe a little longer.

Only difficulty i had was the stock clamp on the thermostat housing side of the tube. Had to move fan on the passenger side up a few inches to get more access to it but once the fan was moved (Just one bolt and you can move it up) clamp came right off, easier access.

Hacksawed tube in half for easy removal and enjoyed throwing the halves away.

New Hose went in easy and zip tied it away from the belt. Looks exactly like WF's pictures and the 1.5X22 hose is perfect and it won't rust.

Works like a charm, its the way to go, thanks WF.

I saw that on Ebay as well. One thing bothered me though , there were no "official" FORD product stickers on the pipe in the Ebay picture. While I'm sure this Ebay product will work , I went for the "official" dealer part to make sure it was exactly the same size/bends.
Trust me on this one, as others have mentioned, getting this pipe in is not easy. If the fit is not exactly right this job will really become a nightmare.

Again, no disrepect to the Ebay seller and I have no reason to think it would not work but....there is a reason most people install the all rubber flexible hose besides the price!

The Ford dealer who installed mine, said they did not make a dime on my installation "labor $ wise", as they too ran into problems getting it out and the new one back in.
The service manager said he had never heard the tech curse as much as he did when he was under my Taurus, and the tech had worked there for 16 years!
Maybe he said that just to make me feel better.

This is a great solution to the $450 problem my mechanic wanted to solve. Couldn't see spending that amount on my '99 unless it was for something really cool :D. Did it last night in about 3 hours and everthing went as expected.

Thanks WagonFreak for the pictures and everyone else for their comments!
I replaced mine with the OEM part.
I would worry about road debris hitting the hose so an extra layer of something to protect the hose on the tire side would be in my use of a flex hose. Like another old hose split cut and put over the flex hose.
Check your tranny cooler lines on the driver side, I had mine rust out from road salt the same way the coolant pipe did.

Sounds like maybe 3/4" or 1" copper tubing from Home Depot, a pipe bender, some hose clamps and you're in business.[/b]
Hello there,

I would like some help with getting that da#*ed hose out of there! I have both ends disconectted but it looks like the motor has to be jacked up to get it out, 2000 sable 3.0 durotec,

any info would be helpful
thread revival.

im working on a buddy's car replacing this PIA hose. he already bought an OEM replacement, but my question is - what is easier to slip it in place? disconnect the front motor mount or take off the thermostat housing. if i choose the latter of the two, is a new seal of some sort needed? i think im still a bit in shock of how much this replacement hose was (of course the full rubber replacement would have been much cheaper) and how difficult this is to replace. many thanks for your advise!

I just used a floor jack to lift the engine just enough to slip the pipe in place.
 Now Ford Motor Company needs to keep its Service Depts busy- that's why you've got totally overpriced, idiotic parts such as the coolant hoses in this thread. The Design Engineers must have been told to put in that crappy useless part to speed assembly. They could have used a flex hose in production from the start---even cheaper!! It's a typical case of useless Engineering Dept but they may have been shot down by the Production Dept. No brains!!
 If you want people to preserve your Western Economy then kick out the stupid "engineers" who put such inbuilt problems into your American buit cars--such as a pennyworth of poor quality piping on an American built vehicle . I think the problem lies with "Scrimp" verus quality. It's not the Engineers either, it's the Production side of it. Oh yes--lets pipe that with a piece of Garbage! The final Product is only as good as it's worst part!!
thanks guys. im now armed with the knowledge that i needed. the taurus just looks sad after been abandoned for the last year, flat tires and all.
:( If Ford expects the consumer to spend $40.000 on a super Taurus, then Ford better stop installing cheap crap components that have plagued the Taurus since it's inception.
In re to the serpentine belt, go gingerly when doing work near this belt. I had a new water pump installed and the tech bumped it with a wrench and ended up having to replace water pump pully and idler, LOL! In re also to the hose issue, I just replaced all my hoses in regards to a/c coolant hoses thermal hoses and reservoir (overflow) hoses. I was at 165,000 miles and did not know previous history of maintenance and so have been replacing all new under hood each weekend. Have done all plugs wiring kits tensioner bar kit, coil my a/c flush did not work. Radiator too damaged, however I ordered a new one (Silla) and they delivered it to my doorstep for under $120.00 and so I replaced that along with my hoses. I don't understand why you could not find this hose at AutoZone as that is the place I got mine. Possibly a new person on duty? Or just someone who is FORD challenged LOL! It cost me $28.00 plus tx. They looked it up in their inventory and they sell them. I would also like to say that mine fell apart on me also when replacing and that is most likely due to it being in a snowy climate before I got her. All the cold weather and salt on streets makes it hard on the pipes and I had issues with my muffler for the same reason. Also some people don't believe in using distilled water when dealing with radiator issues and regular water (in some parts of the US) is not so good. I always use distilled water when required. Also, not getting a proper flush at 20-30,000 mile intervals is not good on the hoses either. Anyway hope you have good luck!

Replacing AC compressor

Noticed my radiator tube was caked in rust so I'm going after it from the top. This is the same radiator rubber/metal tube from the bottom of the water pump to the thermostat housing. Could not get the compressor out until the rusty tube was out because of clearance issues.

I found that the key to getting the tube out was to unbolt the thermostat housing to engine block bracket and then remove the water pump, then the tube turned right out over the AC compressor. I tried a 25" x 1.5" flex tube but it was too long, going after a 22" inch flex tube later today.

Oh yeah, I'm working on a 2000 Duratec wagon with about 96,000 miles.

This is a great thread so I thought I'd throw in my $0.02.

Matt
