Need A New Coolant Hose

43538 Views 109 Replies 51 Participants Last post by  The White Falcon
Hey everybody. So yesterday I was flushing out my cooling system. Figured I'd throw in a new t-stat and check over all the hoses while i was at it. (98 Duratec) Pulled off the lower rad hose, noticed it'd been rubbing on the frame and was showing reinforcing threads. So I figured i'd pick up a new one, no big deal (maybe put some wire loom stuff around it or something). Then I figured i'd check out the hose that goes from the t-stat housing up to the water pump. stuck my hand up in there, and realized it's metal. i thought that was kinda goofy for a water pump, but whatever. so i started fondling it a bit to make sure it was allright, and big chunks of crap fell in my face. and sure enough, the pipe just disintegrated in my hands. which is kind of a pain, yeah, but at least I caught it now and not a week from now when i plan on heading down the mass pike on vacation.

so i'll just pick up a couple new hoses right? i wish. autozone, advance, and carquest don't carry replacements. went to the dearlership. 'bout $30 for the lower hose. $160 some for the "inlet hose". say what? for a hose? fordpartsnetwork has it for $140something which is less bad, but still not what i would classify as 'reasonable,' rockauto doesn't seem to have it at all.

so finally getting to the point of all this rambling ... anyone else had to replace this monster, and if so, anyone know how i can avoid getting raped?

1) How much is it at an auto parts store?
2) What parts are highly recommended to be sprayed with that ****?
When mine rusted through over the summer I replaced it with a single long flex hose. Auto Zone carries one in the perfect length for this application. I did need to use a couple cable ties to keep the hose from getting too close to the belt. $180 for a new pipe at my local dealer, my solution cost less than $15. Been a few months new and so far all is well.

Not too bad. Seems solid enough for now. Any Idea how think the pipe is?

I think I will just soak it in wd40 before I put it on and do so every so often. The rust converter stuff is only good up to 200°F. If the black paint is bubbled up like mine, jsut putting wd over that will probably not help as the moisture is trapped underneath that. My theory was to open it up and let it breath. The heat from the coolant should keep it dry for the most part. Just have to worry about the salt.

A quick pull of the wheel well splash guard and a nice lather of wd should do fine. If I need to replace it in the future, I know how and shouldn't take too long.

I just want to get my car running again. :rant2:

I would use por-15 rust preventer. My pipe looks really bad, but I am going to try this in the spring. If it makes it that long.

15-20 bucks for that can.
As for what to put it on, hell anything thats steel. Shot some up in the wheel wells before the salt attack.

yea this is part that I have trying to find also.Dealer told me the part is being discontinued, so soon even the dealer will not be able to get these. I ended up coating the pipe in high temp epoxy resin and then painting it with chassis black. At this point in time I hope it holds.[/b]
This hose just went on my 1998 Taurus DOHC. I got the old hose off but cannot manuever the new hose to get it in the correct position.
Can any of you guys who have changed this hose give me some hints on how to get this done please? The car has been down for a week now and I really need to get it back on the road.
Thanks,
Jkenny, I ressurected this old thread to try and help us both. In order to remove the fender liner, did you cut the push pins or did you just yank on them to remove the liner? Will they be re-usable or should I buy new push fasteners? Thanks and from what I have read, it may just take you a while to position the pipe.

I pried the pins out very carefully and they look like I will be able to use them again.
Even though Imspent $170 on this part I am close to just buying a flexable rubber hose and installing it as someone else suggested.
I am getting very frustrated.
I know there are others here who have changed this pipe successfully. I wish someone would read this thread and help us out.

Alright. I finally got the hose installed today. I had to loosen the front motor mount on the passenger side and lift the engine a few inches. This gave me enough room to maneuver the pipe into place and get it hooked up.

oh, crap, that does not sound fun. How did you do it? Congrats on getting it done. How did you lift the motor and how hard was it to loosen the engine mounts? Thanks.

Here is the only web site that I found that has the t-hose connect for about $60.00

Some notes:
1. Use hacksaw to cut old one in half for easier removal.
2. Replace with flex hose from AAP.
3. Bangerang.

That would have been 10 times easier than installing that ridiculous pipe. Wish you had posted the suggestion and pictures sooner.
I replaced this pipe with the factory part and the key was removing the thermostat housing. With the housing out of the way, the pipe snaked right in.

So when you say Cut the old one in half... are you talking about the clamps or the pipe itself. I can't access the clamp towards the front of the car... God blessed me with big hands. :p Anyway... someon suggest cutting the clamps with a hacksaw in the Ford Forum... is this what you mean?
I had an idea that may work for the metal hose you're talking about. The flexible copper tubing that SHO suggested will be available from a plumbing supply store ( it's used for underground water service line to the water meter). Gas companies use a similar tubing that is plasticized for underground supply to your house.

There is a trick to making tight bends in either of these types of tube. Cut the piece about six inches longer than you need and plug one end with an expansion plug ( like the rubber freeze plugs at the parts stores). Fill the tube completely with sand so that another plug will just fit into the other end. The sand will help keep the tube from kinking as you bend it. If you don't have a pipe bender, a metal fabricating shop may be able to help but a muffler shop won't have mandrels tight enough for this job. I've made jigs to do such things but they're complicated to describe, so if anyone wants me to try, post back here and say so. I'll do my best lay it out for you.

'Til next time, Popeye

P.S. Another good job for left over Rhino Liner

I only cut the pipe.[/b]
I'm having a lot of problems removing the clip off the pipe attached to the front end of the car. The pinchers were facing up and were unreachable from the bottom. Being the genius I am, I took a dremmel and cut part of the clip... and half of the pincher came off... but the clip itself is now shaped like a C and still clamped pretty tightly. Any suggestions on removing this thing. I'll post pics... my car has been down for nearly a month now.

I did get the other end of the hose off though.
Can you get a choker (slip knot) of braided wire around the remaining pinch tab of the clamp so that you can pull it in the opposite direction of the way the clamp is wrapped around the hose. If you can do that, you can make a handle on the other end for leverage. Wear gloves in case the tool slips.

Good luck, Popeye

Well... using a Dremmel and some long flat head screwdrivers I was able to cut the clip and then pry it off. After I got it off I had the new hose on in about 20 minutes (Using Wagon Freaks Technique). And everything was all good... but appearantly I now have another leak somewhere. I'll have to get it figured out this weekend.

I have no Car Maintenance experience so this was a daunting task for me... and it wasn't even that hard. I may support some local business and give them some work.
