My Vulcan Won A Race!

OK I don't see another place for this topic so I'll post it here. Friday night I was cruising and was leaving the vicinity of town and its chain of stoplights....and got stopped...wouldn't you know it....by the next to the last light. I was a little frustrated as I was getting stopped by every single light I came to.....which only happens on a blue moon. Anyway, the light turned green and the (2001?) Mitsubishi Eclipse next to me decided to "stay with me" as I left the light....so after already being a little frustrated...I gunned the bull. The Eclipse engine was gunned and jumped forward as well. Here's the surprise.....the bull dogged this car. Everytime a gear was changed in the Eclipse my car pulled further ahead and when my transmission changed a gear it jumped ahead of the other car.....never really knew my car did this until this happened. So now I'm going "a little" over the speed limit, hehe, and the Eclipse finally catches up so I slow down so I don't get stopped for racing or anything.....and they gun it past me...all aggravated because they got beat by a Taurus I guess. There was a FINE blonde in the passenger seat so I put two and two together and figured out why he was REALLY mad....hehe. When they went to turn to pull off onto the entrance ramp for the nearby interstate....they went to the lane right of me.....and the driver turned out to be a HOT blonde as well!! I beat a GIRL!

I was confused at this point. I didn't know whether to be glad my car was faster than something.....or laugh because a girl didn't know how to drive her "fast" Japanese trend mobile. Are these cars supposed to be THAT slow?

Are you trying to say something about females who race? <_<

The whole girl thing was kindof a joke but I didn't mean to sound seriously stereotypical. I guess it must have and I meant to put a disclaimer in there and forgot! Sorry....

In fact....a girl in a Taurus is way cooler than a guy in an Eclipse anyday!

So why did you not get onto the highway and follow them?

I'll tell you what - there's something with the way the Taurus is designed or something that doesn't make it "feel" very fast usually - but when you actually go to race something and whatnot (not that I ever have
) it's amazing how well the Taurus can keep up with most things.

Nice kill!

I feel and I KNOW my Vulcan is slow.

Unfortunately, I am always in the Taurus when the 300ZXs and the IS300s bug me; cars that my Explorer would waste.

So how much nitrous are you spraying in that explorer? I went to car-stats.com, here's what they had for the cars you mentioned.

1990 nissan 300zx (n/a):
0-60 - 7.1
1/4 - 15.5

1995 nissan 300zx (turbo):
0-60 - 5.5
1/4 - 13.9

2002 is300:
0-60 - 7.2
1/4 - 15.4

2001 explorer xlt:
0-60 - 9
1/4 - 16.9

2001 explorer sport:
0-60 - 8.4
1/4 - 16.5

2002 explorer limited:
0-60 - 8.8
1/4 - 16.5

None. I have a 4.10 gear package and am only 2WD (Read, short gearing, "light" weight). So with the SOHC motor, it runs a 16.1 1/4.

The IS300 race was on flat ground, and it was up to 50 MPH (End of my 1st gear). We were literally bumper to bumper. I happened to edge out right as I shifted. He had the auto-stick so he wasn't as fast as that manual time you have. Believe me though, I was just as surprised as anyone to beat him.

The 300ZX... well, that was uphill, and it was a standard shift. I don't think the guy knew how to shift very well. When we began racing on flat ground, he would be pulling ahead slightly. The little Nissan looked to be a bit old, but the .43 Coefficient of drag really hurts me.

It's not like I haven't lost a race. I lost to some Civic. I had bought new Goodyears that day, and I was anxious to test them out. So I launched the truck hard, and sat there spinning for about 3 seconds before the tires bit into the road. Confused, and a bit hurt after losing, I went to Exxon to check the tire pressure, and found to my amazement, they were over 40 PSI!
No worries of under-inflation I guess.

I really don't think those 4:10's are making a big difference if your trans is shifting into second at 50mph. Even with the low rear end gears, the trans must be geared really high to be shifting at those speeds, unless your engine winds up to REALLY high RPMs.

And the 2001 is300 tested does 0-60 in 7.4 and the 1/4 in 15.5; still faster.

I'm not saying it's impossible, it's just hard to believe. Who knows, maybe they were poorly maintained, or maybe the other guys can't drive. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

And they probably over inflated the tires to prevent high speed blow outs and roll-overs.

It winds upto 6K RPMs. Not very high. Actually I just looked at my shift chart, and it's at 40 MPH, sorry. It's a 5-speed automatic with dual overdrives, so the transmission is very confusing. At minimum throttle input, the 2nd speed is skipped (2nd speed is 1st gear with OD) and it goes directly to the 2nd gear (Which is the third speed).

When you are going from WOT, it goes into 2nd speed at ~40; 3rd speed at ~57; 4th speed at ~75; 5th speed at ~100.

The reason I get confused is that the 1-2 shift is so quick that you barely notice it. The 2-3 takes a good bit, and that's when I get passed.

I love my 5R auto. Geared so much better than the Taurus, and nearly infinitely better than the horrendous GM autos.

And btw, if you haven't yet, go drive an SOHC Explorer (Or Ranger) and tell me how you like the V-6 sound in the top RPM range. Now imagine that combo in the new Mustang. In 6 months, that imagination will be reality.

A lot of times, the performance ratings are usualy a best case scenario. (low altitude, REALLY good driver, good gas, going downhill, the driver beat up lorenna bobbit and she is gonna hack his peter off, another car pushing it, )

Ever notice how every car in production is labeled as "fast"?

As far as you asking if the JAP CRAP is suppose to be as slow, well, they are more hype than power.
I mean come on, do you really think some 2 liter engine is gonna be anything THAT fast?

Nice job on the kill.

Good thing you didn't persue the blondes, their boyfriends are prolly those REALLY tough rice racer guys (who used to get beat up for their lunch money in school)
