Hello, I just bought and am the proud owner of a 1992 Mercury Sable I knew it has a transmission problem but I bought it anyways I barely made it home, but Iam sure it needs a new one, I was wondering which trans would work? I know its a AXOD E but will a older taurus tranny work? what about a AX4S Iam probably going to try my luck at a local pick and pull where trannys are only $69.99 and bolt one in.

Any help thanks, Also Iam a member at TempoTopaz.com if anyones seen me there my s/n is DevonTopaz

Welcome to the club! Do not get an older or used tranny. They will most likely have more problems that the one already in the car. Newer trannys will probably need a computer with it, but if you swipe it from a '95, then most likely you probably won't need the computer. '95 seemed to be the best year for the G2s.

Well, I had a problem with my 95. Get the ax4n and as soon as you put one in make sure it has a tranny cooler...Aftermarket will prolly be better for it and dont forget the fluid mercon V

One problem with this swap is the number of electrical plugs. The '92 has 2 pllugs and the '93 has one plug. Ford has an adapter that is avalibale through their authorized rebuilders for $100+ that allowes the '92 to be used in the '93(I personally modified the plug to fit in the smaller '92 hole). But going up from '92 means combining the 2 plugs on the car into one plug on the tranny. Or possibly transplanting the wiring with the newer tranny. This would require a pin assignment study to make sure the wires would go to the right place. You could also take the chanel pans off both trannys and match the wiring. Sounds like an interesting swap.

Well I hooked it up to my dads scanner it had lots of codes

176 EGO no switching Lean EXH Bank 2

452 OPEN VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR

628 EXCESSIVE CONVERTER CLUTCH SLIPPAGE

634 MANUAL LEVER POS SENSOR OUT OF RANGE

648 4th Gear RATIO incorect

Looks as if the IMP sensor went out and the Speed sensor went out also which probably caused the trans to fail.
