ok ive got an inspiron 8600 rigged into the stereo speakers, but im getting tired of it just sitting either on the floor or the passenger seat. is there a way to mount it without buying one of those expensive ass mounting kits. perhaps something i could build myself? any help would be great.

I really can't think of any way to do it. Since you still need access to the screen, you can't close it and stick it in the glove box or the center console. If you can tell us where you want to mount it, we might be able to think something up...

If you wanted to spend a little money, you could stick the laptop under a seat. All laptops have a port for an external monitor, so you could probably connect one of those little 4" screens that mount anywhere and put it above the stereo. Theres wireless mice and keyboards that you can get, too.

Just a thought- too much work though.

thnx speedy, but ive already thought about going that route. the only thing is that i like to be able to watch dvds on the bigger screen. the power inverter for it is in the glovebox.

You could get a ticket for having something that shows a movie that is within viewing of the driver.

look in a junkyard for an old Taurus police car. If you can find one from '95, it either has or used to have a laptop mount, which you could get for cheap.

i know i could get pulled over while watching a movie, its mainly for long hauls, pulled over on side of road resting. but at night the winamp vizualization thing is crazy in the car. great idea on going to the junkyard. imma try that in the next week or so, need time off work. i kinda cheated and didnt have to hardwire anything. but this will suffice for now. works just fine.

Yeah, have you heard the stories of people driving along with pornos playing on their vehicle DVD player in full view of others driving along?! Too funny, or maybe not, i dunno...

I would think that even if you could get something to mount the laptop, you'd want it to be able to be removed easily so you're not parked somewhere and it's stuck out in plain view. I don't know how easily removed the ones that are designed for police/emergency use are.

The 4" screen sounds like a good idea, but you've addressed that already...Anyway, good luck with it!

But, the police usually take all that stuff out before they get rid of the car. Plus it wouldn't work on his car since it's a floor shift model.

getting a smaller screen i think would defeat my whole purpose, the 15.4 inch screen rules on trips. the laptop would be removed on a daily basis, and moved outta plain sight when not in use, damn you thieves. so basically just something that it would sit on and not fly off when i turn. its starting to look like i just might have to buy it. ive seen them on ebay like babysho suggested, but damn. still thinking of ideas.

how about another screen mounted so that it drops down from the roof/headliner?

Unfortunately those regular screens do not offer a very good resolution. Not something that you would want to hook a laptop up to. If you really want to get that thing put in the car, I recommend heading over to www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/index.php. Someone there was probably about what you want to do.

Couldn't you try and make something that swings up from between the seats that you could mount it on? That would be coolio. B)

Kinda something like the airline trays when you sit in the first or emergency rows...
