I was just doing a routine MAF cleaning, and started the engine with the hood open. I put the trans in O-Drive, and the engine looked like it was going to hop out of the car! Okay, I put it in Reverse, and the engine bucked an equal amount in the other direction. I put it back in O-Drive, and it bounced again, and then it threw a CEL. I shut it down, then re-started it, and CEL went out.

This scares the crap outta me; I've fiddled with cars for well over 40 years, and I've never seen an engine jump like this one! Both front and rear (right & left?) motor mounts appear shot.

How rough is it to replace the mounts on this 1995 Essex? Anybody ever pay to have it done? How much?

I had to replace my motor mounts on my gen 2 because the engine felt like it was going to fall off....Sure enough, i replaced them everything worked well again, and no thumping whenever i put the car into gear....Then again a few months later they started going bad again...and till this day im still hearing that thumping

Sometimes i want to junk the gen 2....

Yeah, if I could afford it, I'd replace the Sable. Unfortunately, I can't afford to have it fixed, and can't afford to replace it.

Looks like some long lonely hours ahead, under the car...

If your motor mounts are going bad than something is making them go bad. They should last a long time.

Odds are that you have something leaking contaminating the motor mounts.

An oil leak or power steering leak could do this.

I had a 1992 Taurus with a power steering leak. The motor mounts went bad. First it was the front one, then it was the back one. At the time I didn't have any money to get them replaced so I just let them go for awhile. Eventually the transmission mount went bad. By the time we took it in, the bill was around $350.00.

About a week later the front one went bad...AGAIN. Found out that the power steering was contaminating them. So the shop fixed them for me for free this time.

I think it was the SAME day driving home, the engine started "thumping" again. The power steering fluid had ruined the front mount: AGAIN!

This time before all the mounts went bad. I just chained the engine down. It fixed the problem and cost me around $12.00. A lot better than $350.00. I don't know what happened because about 3 weeks later we got rid of it.

So are any of you leaking fluid?

Thats an easy DIY job. Mounts are only about $40 each.
