lightly spray it with electrical contact cleaner. do not use carbeurator cleaner or anything like that. then let it dry. Do not touch the sensor. The wires are extremely fragile.
The sensor housing shouldn't get dirty really. But use the same contact cleaner and a rag. A little dust on the housing won't hurt a thing. The contact cleaner will break up ant grease.
On older cars, the connector to the MAF can also cause problems (there's been a discussion over on the SHO lists about this the last few days). Also clean the MAF connector, and make sure that it is tight.
