'96 Taurus LX, 100k on the odometer, 3.0 Duratech, auto trans, disc front and drum rear brakes, no abs

Today is the day to work on the Bull. Specifically, I am trying to chase down a brake noise. There is a grinding noise from the brakes at low speed and high pedal effort such as going forward down my driveway (steep). No noise is present when backing down the driveway. There is no noise in normal city traffic. The pads and shoes were replaced about 10k miles ago with semi-metallic components. The front rotors were turned, but the drums in the rear were OK.
The car is up on stands now and there are no loose parts, sand in the drums, etc. Everything looks tight and clean.

Many thanks for any and all replies.
