Nick and Joe, what's your level of confidence in this info? Because I just received a 3F1T-18C851-AA that I ordered off of car-part.com, and it looks exactly like the base RCU...same size and shape, no heat sinks, and no MACH identification.

That is not the correct one. Check under the *confirmed section* a few posts up. I am removing your part # off the list, as it obviously isn't correct.

There are confirmed, 100% accurate:
XF1F-18C851-CA(from Gen 4)
XF1F-18C851-AA
XF1F-18C851-EA(from Gen 3)

F7DF-18C851-LA is definitely a JBL RCU not MACH.

Here is a weird one I don't see much:

F6DF-18C851-DE

It looks exactly like a MACH / JBL but it has a small sticker on it that says "ANALOG". I pulled it from a '96 Taurus wagon along w/ the tweeters/tweeter covers. The tweeter covers say "Ford Premium Sound" in place of the "JBL" or "MACH" labels.

Sounds like a very early 96. Interesting. Thanks for posting, I've added it :)

I do not know what to consider it? Pre-JBL or Pre-Mach? I'll post pics in a minute

I was looking at one of the sales brochures from a 96 Taurus. Apparently, wagons did not have the JBL option, they instead had "Premium Sound" (I guess Ford didn't want to try installing a subwoofer in wagons). So the Premium Sound amp from a 96 wagon is essentially a MACH RCU. :)

Wanted to check as I got the thinkin'. Did the newer "Mach" systems also had a separate subwoofer(s) in the back deck next to the OEM 6x8's?

I noticed that there was room for additional speakers when a recently removed the rear deck lid cover.

Nope, just the 1996 sedans with the JBL system had the subwoofer in the hole. 97-07 it sat empty.

My 2003 SE has single CD player and 4 speakers...

I'd LOVE to upgrade to the MACH system (premium sound is ok too)....

What do I need to do to make the upgrade?? And how pricey do you think it would be?
