From what I have read, it seems like I could tilt the compressor down, remove the nut, slide the clutch off and remove the shim. Other posts say remove the subframe. Any last minute advice?

Lowering the subframe is not the same as removing it. The bolts are about 4" long. You just loosen them to get some more wiggle room.
