We have a 2000 Taurus Duratec station wagon, with 57,000 miles. We bought it new.

My wife reports that yesterday the power failed on the brakes. She managed to stop it, turn the ignition off and back on, and the power brakes have been OK since. I drove the car a couple times last evening without problem.

Question 1: Is this something that others have seen (or is it more likely that my wife somehow hit the gas and brake together?)

Question 2: If possibly true, what might be the cause?

Just out of curiousity, was it rainning or were the roads wet at the time this happened to her? If so the brakes might have been wet. It's also possible that she might have hit both pedal at the same time. I've done that once or twice in the past when wearing work boots.

It was damp, but I don't think wet disks are the answer.
She had stopped under a roof to fill the gas tank.
The brake failure occured just when she started the engine after fillup.

It's not a common problem. You should check the vacuum line near the booster to see if there are any leaks.

Truth arrives slowly.

Later she told me that the power steering also was out.

And that she started downhill.

Later she concluded that she probably never started the engine.
That easily explains the steering and brake failures.

Few women are good auto mechanics. Fortunately, she doesn't read this.

I consider the case closed.
