The extra "thing" is for silencing the intake sound. The aluminum piece you have the blue circle on is the MAF sensor. You'll need to keep that. The red circle is around the PCV fresh air tube. That should stay intact too.

Ideally, you'll want to get rid of the accordion hose, airbox, and everything upstream of the airbox. Those are the big problems. To retain the MAF sensor, you'll need to get a MAF sensor adaptor from Draxas Performance. That will enable you to connect both ends of the MAF sensor to a tubing of your choice.

So, that means this adapter should work. It stats a 3" cone filter will fit (oppose to the 70/75mm one).

Yeah, they say that a 3" cone will fit it, but you don't want to put the filter right on the adapter. Lots of people do that and say that they have a CAI, but it's really just a HAI. A rubber 3" pipe connector would probably work nicely on the adapter, and then you could hook it up to any standard 3" PVC pipe to draw cold air from inside the fender.
