Hello all.
So let me get right down to it. I don't know what engine I have in my car. Every time I go to an auto store im always getting the wrong parts for it because no one seems to know what engine is in it. My car is a 2004 Ford Taurus SE. Well... I believe it is an SE. I've had the vin decoded and some say its an SES. Here is the vin - 1FAFP55S14G163076.
The eight Digit is an S so that means Duratec DOHC right? But my engine doesn't have anything that says Duratec on it and it doesn't have the coils over the plugs. It has the 1 large coil and wires running to the plugs. Is this right? I cant find any other info so I figured I would ask. And is it an SE or an SES? If you need more info just ask!! Thanks!!

Yes you have a Duratec engine, and it's supposed to have the COP, not the single coil pack. Does your engine look like this?

It shows a BUILD date of 2004, but are you sure it's not a late build 2003? What is on the title(2003 or 2004)?

No my engine does not look like that. It has the one coil and plug wires. I looked at my door and it says manufacture date is 02/04. My title says it is an 04. The title says it is an SES. But the trunk lid says SE. Maybe the trunk lid has been replaced? the car is black.

Then apparently the DOHC was replaced with an OHV
The DOHC is a better engine correct? Thats so weird. Why would someone install a worse engine? Maybe it was cheaper? And do you think its an SES or a SE?

A Vulcan is not necessarily "worse". They both have their pluses and minuses. The only thing that would make sense is that the previous owner had blown the Duratec and had a donor car with a good motor and swapped everything over. Without REALLY knowing what the PO did, it's all speculation. Out of curiosity, I would check to make sure the vin on the door sticker, the vin plate on the dash, the title all match. FordEtis says it's a SE Sport, aka SES. Trim level(SES, SE) doesn't make a difference when the engine doesn't match the vin. Take some pictures of the car and post them. This is interesting.

VIN swap is the more likely issue here.

I've seen this once before. The PO likely had the Duratec blow on him, and when shopping for a replacement engine found out that the Vulcan is cheaper to source by a decent margin, especially if you're shopping reman and not in junkyards. When you look for parts you need to make sure that you're getting parts for the 3.0 OHV, and NOT the DOHC.

Btw, I would check what the PCM shows as the VIN number, because that will most likely confirm if the swap was done at a dealer or on the cheap. If the PCM VIN doesnt match the one on the body, it can cause you to fail inspection by default in states like New York. And the computer will have been swapped with the engine since they're different between the two engines.

Where is the PCM at? I can look real quick and let you know what the vin is on it. sorry didnt mean to quote everyone on this!!

The catch code on the PCM should match the decal on the strut tower.

I'm not so sure. That door sticker looks like it's always been there. Not to mention it was 100% impossible to get a factory sunroof on a SE. Maybe there was some collision damage and the trunk lid was replaced at some point? Hard to say what foolery is going on here. It's also funny that it says "less keyless entry" but yet it came with a remote. ETIS is goofy like that sometimes. I've seen shady dealers "uprate" to a SEL before and charge more without actually adding any options, but never the reverse.

well, I don't have a scan tool so I guess we will never know about the vin in the PCM. And If the attached pic is the sticker on the shock tower you were referring to, it doesn't match any of the numbers on the PCM. Or at least the thing on the passenger firewall that I believe is the PCM.
