One month short of its 30th birthday, Old Faithful has a power steering rack which leaks like a sieve now. I seem to remember, years ago, a thread which I can't find which stated there were two different racks for the Taurus - one had two fluid hose connections, the other had three. Why the difference, I have no idea. Seems to me there only need to be two, but what do I know...

Short of clambering beneath the car at my age and (poor) physical condition, is there a way of determining which one I'll have to start searching for?

1990 Taurus wagon, Vulcan if it matters.

Three port is for the Variable Assist Power Steering feature. It was an $104 option back then for the 3.0, standard on the 3.8. If the steering feel changes based on your speed, you've got it, but I would hazard a guess you don't have it.

Thanks, my friend - my car was well-equipped with the standard features but had few extra-cost options. I added the power seats on both sides (the passenger side was a custom-build as it wasn't even offered in the Taurus for 1990) and did a few other interesting upgrades to make the car handle and behave more the way I wanted it to do. I'll be looking for the two-port rack...what I have certainly does not feel like variable-assist power steering.

P.S. Mileage is now 198,794 miles on the clock...1206 miles to go before the second turnover. The numerals on the left side of the odo are starting to move...:)

^ Frank, if you need the 2 port, no VAPS, I'd recommend from Rockauto the Cardone #22214 for $61.79 with no core. If you need he 3 port, with VAPS, I'd recommend the Cardone #22225 for $82.99 with no core.

Get a set of 3/8" drive crowfoot wrenches, will make it easier to get the lines off the old rack from above with extension and ratchet.

For those who responded, sorry I didn't follow up sooner! - I forgot I had this loose thread. Took it to our Volvo specialist (Randy sold the business, and while he doesn't advertise the fact the new owner Rich will work on everything) and after he cleaned off the mess he found a pinhole leak in the high-side PS hose. $116 lighter, and the steering system doesn't leak a drop now.
