well transmission number 2 went today. I have no forward gears at all all i have is reverse. I think i may call it quits with the bull nd buy either a subaru or VW. I have 54,000 on this trans and dont beat on the car.
Damn man, that sucks. Was there any warning of the trans failing? Good luck with a different car.

I don't know if I could say it better myself.
Of course I don't want you to quit with your Taurus, but it's not up to me. I just hope you're happy with whatever you decide to do.

I would recommend to try to find an AX4N somewhere around. Mine has 117k and still shifts nice (neglecting the thump from bad motor mounts), and from what I've seen, it's one of the best trannies Ford puts in our cars (ha, so hard to compete with the AX4S)

Sorry to hear that
The Gen 4 Tranny is MUCH better (I had a Gen 3). If you're willing to give the Taurus another shot, I would recommend looking at Gen 4's. I beat on mine a lot more than I should and *knocks on wood* it is still rock solid.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
You have put a lot of time, effort and money into your car, it would sadden a lot of us to see it go.

Best regards.

That does start a good discussion, sorry to jack the thread, but I am looking at a addt'l cooler for my tranny. Also considering a shift kit to firm it up a bit, feels like a damn rubber band swapping gears for me. Whats the consensus on helping the stock tranny w/o a full rebuild w/ better parts? What has been done and found successful, other than the cooler itself.

That is a good point... I would like to add a cooler or something as preventative maintenance to my car as well.

I thought you wanted to upgrade, not downgrade after the Taurus.
Don't get a VW if you hate transmissions. It will make you miss your Taurus. Trust me.

Scoobies are alright cars, but still not the greatest thing in the world. What about Volvo? Perhaps Mazda? The Mazda 3 is a very nice car, and for under $20K you can't complain with what you get.

yo drop the bull and get a vw, you wont be sorry. you know you wont one
Volkswagen is actually worse than Ford (J.D. Powers).

If you want a quality German car, get a BMW.

The only problem with this is that BMW tends to stand for Big Money Wasted (actually, it stands for Bavarian Motor Works).

They're actually reliable and high quality cars. But when something does go wrong, expect a really expensive repair bill, hence the amusing acronym. - Reinhart
