How To Diy Power Steering Flush

1230 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  shoz123
Hello All,

Did a search but couldn't find an answer but has anyone done a power steering flush themselves?

I have a 99 Taurus with a Duratec engine. Can any one provide me with some details as to the procedure in doing so such as which hose to detach etc, etc.

Thanks for any help suggested.

RC,

I got a turkey baster at Dollar General for ..... a dollar. Every morning I sucked out (with the baster) about 1/2 a pint of power steering fluid and replaced it with new fluid. Did this for about a week or so until I'd removed about 2 + liters of fluid.

Now this isn't exactly a flush but the fluid is pretty clear and red.
If the system is really dirty it may take a week or so to get the fluid dirty again. be sure to keep checking it by putting a drop of the fluid on a white paper napkin.

What I did is change it every 2-3 days with the turkey baster using cheap ATX fluid. Once it stayed clean for two weeks I then started refilling with a synthetic ATX. After using two quarts of this I stopped and two years later it is still good as new.
