Should say 16 valve, I haven't seen any 12 valve Zetecs before :p

The Zetec, sounds okay, it is no Vulcan, but you won't get much out. Mine actually sounded kind of sweet with some fancy chrome intake I got for free for it with a cone filter.

I imagine doing some exhaust work might help too.

oops sorry my math was off im tired lol :p

yeah what kind of muffler would be good at some point the car was straight piped i never got to hear it without the muffler my dad put one on it right away... but he clamped it so easy removal lol
an intake would be nice but it would have to be cheap im on a budget now thanks to school

edit: does anyone know the diameter of the exhaust on a zetec contour?

Straight piping is illegal on a car equiped with emissions, it won't pass inspection or smog check, if they do that there. I would think you could put a higher flow converter on it with a high flow performance muffler, there should be a nice array of aftermarket mods available for it. This should make it sound pretty good, and give a little more hp out of it. Theres another member (Spridget) on here that has a couple of Contours that he's done some interesting mods on.

4-bangers just don't sound good for the post part. I've been through it on an escort gt. I put on an aftermarket muffler on it and within a year I put the stock one back on. 4-bangers drone like a mofo!! Now I think a good sounding 4-banger car is one you can't hear unless you are at WOT and then I like it muted as much as possible. The only 4-banger exhaust note I like is the Subaru. The boxer 4 has a nice throaty sound to it compared to any I-4.
...of course I'm biased. The 5.0 has spoiled me :D

i have heard some decent 4 banger exhaust. my gti being one of them along with my neon and my ranger.. the key for me was having a resonator before the muffler.. my neon with a borla muffler was the quietest but when i got on it it was louder.. the ranger had a flowmaster on it and it was deep and loud droned at times.. at idle and low rpm ppl thought it was a v6. and the gti runs an apr exhaust which sounds great. to be honest i'd stay away from a flowmaster and go with a magnaflow or borla with a resonator. reason being is flowmaster sometimes tend to be raspy at times on some cars ( i feel)

For the record, I think MY Escort sounds pretty good for having paid all of about $60 bucks for the whole thing.

I'm assuming you've never heard an old Triumph or an MG or even an old Sunbeam, or any of the other little European four poppers, most of those sound absolutely amazing.

depends on what you want really....

my recommendations:

stock contour SVT dual exhaust ($100 maybe)

then get 2 Flowtech Warlock Mufflers (sound like flowmasters, but have a cutout type thing) so you can uncork them and use them as straight pipes when you want, and then just use a magnaflow resonator instead of the stock on and leave the cats stock.

also, if you like the big can look go to ebay and just type in N1 Muffler, i had 2 4"ers on the csvt and it looked really good and they sound great, really quiet actually.

My advice for making a 4 banger sound good? Add 2 or 4 more cylinders. :p

Sable.. mine is an LX. I installed a GT header, a magnaflow super free flow cat that I paid $10 for from ebay, got a NOS Ford stock replacement muffler for $10 from ebay, and bought a Maremont replacement exaust pipe, from partsamerica for $35, it's the 7' long pipe that goes from the cat, to the muffler. You can ask Mark, Russell, Jose and Luke, it sounds pretty mean.

My Morris with a 1275cc Sprite engine had a 3-1 header (2 middle exhaust valves share 1 port), a cherry bomb, a turbo muffler, and 1.75" side exit. It had a deep rumble, no rasp. I loved setting off car alarms in parking lots, and parking garages were insane. On a modern car, keep a catalytic converter to eliminate rasp.

It has escaped my memory, because it's been far too long since I've been in the car. :(
