I need some help. There is a 95 Z24 Cavi that keeps whoopin my a** on the strip. I have a 91 GL w/ the Vulcan. I need to know all of the LEAST expensive mods I can do to make my car's performance @ least match that Z24's.

I only got $116 last paycheck so try and remember that before you suggest NOS.....

knowing u have a vulcan, and ur goin against a lighter z24, im not totally sure ur goin to beat it either way, but i suggest gettin a cone airfilter, when it comes down to racetime if ur at a dragstrip, take out some of the parts, like everything in the trunk, rear seats, floormats, passenger seat, doorpanels, everything and anything that is light. either way, i dont think ur goin to beat a z24, specially if it has a manual tranny,
either way, this is posted in the wrong part, its supposed to go in the engine and drivetrain

A CAI can be made from home depot parts for pretty cheap, that might help you a little bit. Still need that cone filter though. All and all should be way under 100 bux. Reducing weigt is definatly a plus too.

A 1993 Z24, according to car-stats.com runs a 17.2s 1/4th time - It shouldn't take a whole lot for you to beat that, but I don't know how much, if any the Cavalier speed increased from 93-95. Also, this time may not accurately reflect the car's ability - it was submitted by somebody - you have to look at the source on those stats when you use them. A lot of them are from magazines, which I would say are accurate.

Its an automatic. He had a custom exhaust put in, I don't know if that would bump up his performance all that much, but I'm not totally sure what it is. Makes his car sound like a motorcycle and he said its not a glasspack. I really don't know. I was talking with him and he suggested getting new headers. How much would that cost and would that be all that effective? I heard that a torque strap would help as well.

you could always turbo it

or since you've only got 116 dollars to work with, I'd suggest mutiple stickers, maybe a big a$$ exhaust tip, and even interior neons. You should be able to bump your hp to about 375 at the wheels.

Just my suggestion

or you could just get that whistle thing to put in your exhaust to make it sound like it has turbo

Ok, this guy is pissing me off, now. He says he's "doing things" to his car to make it faster and said he estimated his HP to be around 160......I beat him in my mom's 2002 Olds Alero w/ a 3.4L V6 w/170 HP... It's a sedan, alot heavier than his Z24. I cannot imagine his HP being anywhere near 160 if I beat him so bad in a heavier car that has only 10 more HP. It's really stupid. He loves to rev his little 4 banger when I'm in my Bull, but all of a sudden when I'm in the Olds, he backs down.
"No, man. I don't wanna race today..." BullJunk, man. You just know you're gonna lose. I'm sorry, I'm here talking to myself. It just makes me really angry.

If you really want to beat him that bad, go with the weight reduction, put 1/8th tank of gas, pump up your rear tires and let some air out in your front for better traction and off-the-line pickup, and totally remove your air filter/box and put one of those aluminum tubes from home depot in its place for that one race. You can turn it back to normal after you whoop his a**
That will probably cost you around $5. You can also go to ebay, order up one those $20 fart mufflers and install it yourself with a couple of muffler clamps. Another $40 right there...then maybe another $5 for the torque strap mod...

Some of my suggestions are in jest, but all of these things have been done by people who seriously race on the strip so...

Don't do the fart can--go with the summit turbo muffler-$15 baby and good flow capability.-"http://store.summitracing.com/product.asp?d=8&s=598&p=1736&searchtype=ecat"

You can get it welded, or for cheaper get some clamps.

Z24's had the 3.1l V-6. You mentioned 4 banger in one of your posts. Is it a 4, or a 6? If it's a 4, and he's whooping you, I'd suggest a tune-up first. Cover the basics, and go from there. With $116, though, the only way you're going to beat him is weight reduction.

This just came to me, he could just buy one of those exhaust cutoff's and basically run WITHOUT any exhaust for the duration of the race. If you don't beat him, at least you'll scare the crap out of him with the unbridled, unhindered sound of VULCAN POWAH!!! I can't believe i just said that

I saw his engine last nite after work, its a 4 cyl. So does that mean its not a Z24 engine? I only had $116 last paycheck cause I only worked like 5 days for 2 weeks, I usually get around $250 a paycheck.

Anyway, He had a cone air filter, it looked like. He took the box off of it and it just sits there. He said that theres a bunch of things he just "took off" his engine. Says theres a pile of parts @ his house. I don't really believe that becuase theres not that many things you can take OFF to increase performance. I was thinking of getting one of those mufflers, but are they all those really big ugly things? I DO NOT want one of those for the love of god. I found some @ Autozone for around $40-$80.

Is it really possible to take off the box for MY filter? When I look at it it just doesnt look like it would work that way.

One last thing while im here, how much would a GEN 1 SHO be? Would $1000 raise your eyebrows about how reliable the car is? I'm thinking of just buying a SHO...
Cuz he says his Z24 can beat SHO's..........

2.4 Liter Engine
The 2.4 Liter, 16-valve, Twin Cam engine is standard on Z24 Coupe and Z24 Convertible -- optional on LS Sedan. The Twin Cam’s multi-valve design provides outstanding balance and strong horsepower through a wide rpm range -- 150 hp at 5600 rpm and 155 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm. Other features include:

"In-Oil-Pan" Design Balance-Shaft System
Helps ensure smooth, quiet performance in the mid- and high-end engine speeds. Sequential Fuel Injection Precisely delivers fuel to each cylinder providing smoothness at idle, and optimum performance. Composite Intake Manifold Helps reduce noise and weight.[/b]
Thats the engine I saw last nite. I knew it wasn't a V6, but is it supposed to have that 3.1L?

Go with the Summit Racing Turbo Mufflers over at Summit Racing for $15 each. A couple of SHO people have used them and pleased with the results. Go with a cone filter and parts from Home Depot to make a CAI, then while you are there, get a chain and couple of bolts and nuts to make a torque strap. If you do all the labor yourself, you probably not break $100 for those three things. Oh yeah, it's always a good thing to adjust your tire pressure right before you race - and that's free (for the most part).

Removing the entire airbox assembly (filter, box and all) is a temporary solution that should be done during race time only. That was all I was saying

SHO's are high maintanance compared to regular Tauruses...a few to things to ask the seller is if the 60k maintenance has been done. That alone costs another $1000, leading to a lot of owners selling their cars right before it comes up. There's some other things to look for in a used SHO, just go over to SHOtimes.com and look at their second-hand buyers guide.
