hi, i have a 98 merc sable... its got the 3.0 vulcan, and the ax4n transmission, the other day when i was driving i could hear a slight noice but i was really quite and then as i got onto a higher speed road and started to pick up speed it got loader and loader, i quickly pulled over and then gave it some gas and it didnt move, i put the car into park and let off the brake and it started to roll back (was heading up an escarpment) so i put the ebrake on and called caa. now my question is, i was thinking it was maybe the transmission blew, but i was told that park is a pin or somthing and that if the transmission blows it should still lock into place, keeping the car from rolling. so im not sure if it could be a blown transmission, or and axle, or what ever connects the 2.... do front wheel drive cars have drive shafts??? any ideas or help would be awsome.... the car also makes a loud whineing noice when put into park from any gear,

Snapped parking pawl, perhaps? Either way, you'll be in for some expensive repair work.

yea... iv priced some transmissions and i can get a used one from the scrap yard tested and everythign for 150 cnd or i can get a rebuilt one for 200 - 250 cnd but i wanna make sure its the transmission first and not somthing else , like if it was an axle or what ever it has instead of a drive shaft then it would roll backwards when in park... but probalay wouldnt make the whining when put into park... fml i may just find a parts car for 300 and switch the whole front end

Snapped half shaft or half shaft somehow pulled out of tranny due to CV or tripod joint failure.
