Help! My Taurus Thinks Its A Snail!

1626 Views 11 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  jason8225
I just took delivery on an '04 Taurus SE with the 3.0L Vulcan powerplant, and I can't believe how slow it is! My previous car was an '01 Malibu, also a 6 cyl, and the difference in pickup is depressing. With the A/C on, the Taurus is hesitant and sluggish from a dead stop; reminds me of an older car with a dirty carburetor. The 'get up and go' improves slightly with the A/C load off; still much stodgier than the Malibu (which was no prize performer, either).

I'm new to the TCCA and am looking for suggested 'tweaks' to improve performance, but I can't get too carried away with mods, as this is a company car.
Any other '04 Taurus owners out there with similar performance issues?

Vulcans are the slowest engine package you can get in the Taurus. Face it, Vulcans=pickup? No way. Vulcans=reliable... they are no pickup machine though. Some performace mods like a chip and some other things might pick you up a bit more...

PS: Welcome to the site :)

welcome to the TCCA. we just got a 2004 taurus se also. it is the slower one out of the line, ive driven a malibu b4, but that was in drivers ed, so i didnt get to test it. ive basically been driving all vulcans, and they dont seem too bad from 0-50. i mean its no performance engine, but when it wants to, it will go. if its a company car i wouldnt do anything thats not reverseable. maybe a chip or something like that will give u a higher shift point and make it feel faster.

Since its a company car, maybe they might have done something to it to inhibit performance.

I did :p

not much out for the vulcan right now, especially nothing I'd put on a company car... and the taurus probably weighs a bit more than the malibu

HAHAHAH, you are comparing a GM to a Ford?!?!??!? Pass some of that over here! ;)

A word of advice - if you're going to brag about being more powerful and seeing everyone in your rear view mirror, you MIGHT want to have more than just a mere 180 HP.

Your G.M 3.8 so-called "High output" V6 - 180HP. My Ford 3.2 V6 - 220HP. 'Nuff said. ;)

Go bash Ford and Tauruses somewhere else. The fact that we have nearly 3,000 enthusiasts for a family car speaks for itself. You don't like it, then you don't have to be here.

Oh Yeah, and long live the discontinued Cutlass.
