2000 Sable-OHV engine- Driving down the highway, lost power and steam was coming from engine compartment. When I pulled over and poped the hood steam was coming out of the engine between the heads and blocks. Before this, there was no signs of overheating. Besides the blown head gaskets, what does any one think went wrong? The coolant was all rusty.

Well anytime you over heat there is the chance the heads cracked or warped.

The possibility of the block cracked.

Really won't know till you investigate.

Yeh you really won't know until it is taken splattered and looked over. There are far to many variables to what could have happened and what all is damaged.

Top of pistons were flooded with water, but engine turns over. How can I check for twisted connection rods?

Doubt it would have twisted connecting rods if it turns over and runs. Don't worry too much about twisting the connecting rods. You should worry about warpped heads.
