My squeeze has a 99 with the duratec engine but I'm not sure which model transmission. Approx. 85K miles on it.

When driving, it shifts very hard between 1st and 2nd gears. The rest feel normal.

Is this an indicator of rebuild time, or maybe a sensor or something going out?

Any ideas would help.

Thanks,
Glenn

Replace vss (vehicle speed sensor). Check level and condition of fluid first (check with eng. hot, idling in park). She has the 19 bolt ax4n tranny in the tec. Vss is almost a maintenance item on a 99 tec.

Shelia and Jeff...thanks you both for your responses. I'll be pulling the vss out thursday evening, hopefully this is all it is. Fluid is proper level/clean/etc. From the looks of a few other posts, this sensor is going to be a monkey stretch to get at. Ah well...bring on the advil.
