Hey all... I just want to say that I went ahead and stuck my foot in the door at Andy's Auto Sport (www.andysautosport.com) and challenged them to produce a Gen III body kit. Here is the email I sent them:

"Hello,
I first have to say that I'm very impressed with the selection your company has in aftermarket body parts, especially your body kits. However, I think that I should point out a market that nobody to this day seems to have tapped into, and perhaps could bring you alot of business.

In 1996, Ford introduced the newly designed Taurus that redefined automobile body design for the years ahead, continuing to produced the so-called "Generation III" until 1999. However, in the years since this car has been out, nobody has seemed to take this car seriously in terms of aftermarket body styling. Ford made a concept Taurus, called the Taurus Rage, which sported a race style body kit (I attached a picture of this car). Unfortunately, this car never went into production, much less the body kit.

Please don't take this car as some "family car" that isn't worthy of notice in the aftermarket community. Unlike the Honda Accord "Japanese Family-Car" (which has a huge amount of body kit selection), Gen IIIs (1996-1999) have never come with any engine with less than 3.0 L of displacement or 6 cylinders. Ford even produced the SHO Taurus which included a 235 hp 3.4L V-8 engine. All Gen III bumpers, sideskirts, and fenders are interchangeable and fit the body with little or no modification (There were small aesthetic changes between the 96-97 and 98-99 models, but nothing critical). Therfore, a market for ALL 1996-1999 Ford Taurus models, regardless of trim, exists when it comes to body kits. To say it shortly, a demand DOES exist.

Don't take my word for it. I have visited many forums and websites that focus entirely on the Taurus. I have seen so many posts of people asking about body kits for the Gen III, but its the same "Don't exist" type of answer. Therefore, I have chosen to ask your company to do something about this. Therefore, I have posted your website address and email in these forums, and instructed all to email a message verfifying their demand for this product. You may notice suggestions as to what style is demanded. Please take these seriously... This is your potential market and what they expect. Any moves to tap into it for profit is up to you.

One last note: I'm sure you've noticed that I've only focused on the Gen III Taurus. Well, as a GenIII owner myself, I'm partial by default to my car. You should, however, expect to see feedback from Taurus owners of all years about production of body kits for their cars.

I trust you are all professionals at your job, and you may have encountered customer inquieres such as mine in the past. I thank you for taking the time to read this message."

So, now I challenge all Gen III owners interested to email them a short message with the subject "Ford Taurus Body Kits". Just tell them you own a Gen III Ford Taurus and that you're a potential buyer. If you wish, give them a small description of the style that you're looking for (I went ahead and said the Taurus Rage style was cool enough).

Hey,
Well, they responded to my email and said that they actually just unveiled plans to start on a body kit for the '03 and years compatible with it. They are open to all other Generations, so keep those requests coming in!

Update:

Andy's Auto Sport said that they will be happy to take volunteers that would like to volunteer their Generation I, II, or III Taurus to them for body kit development. You would have to leave your car with them for several weeks for the development, but you get a free body kit in the end! Here's their info:

Ok, here's a chance for all the whiner's and anyone else interested in this to step up and actually get something they wanted in a long time done - and done right.

If plans for a gen 3, 1 or 2 kit fall through because no one was willing to volunteer their car, well, it will be this community's own fault. So no whining afterwards M'kay?

Go to their website www.andysautosport.com. Their prices are very decent. This isn't a group buy. They're going to offer body kits for Taurii just like they do for every other car they have. (I think a kit similar to that of the Ford Contour would look good on a GEN III)

I said this before, and I'll say it again. Email them and tell them that you are interested in buying a body kit for whatever Taurus you have (make sure mention which generation). Then tell them you what suggestions you have as to the style of the body kit. Then, if you live in their area (Malpitas, CA) and have a GEN I, II, or III, contact them and tell them you want to get a free body kit for volunteering your car to them for a few weeks. (GEN IVs, they already have a car volunteered).

I'm telling you, if they open their email every day and see a crap-load of messages with the subject "Ford Taurus Body Kits", they will see the demand and not hesitate so much to speed up the process. Otherwise, they're always going to wonder just like everybody else has in the past if people want body kits for the Taurus.

This is coming from experience... if you guys really want to impress them, start putting some money down. They'll have to refund it if they don't produce the kits. Also, don't micro-manage these guys, let them build their own kit. If they want input - tauruscarclub.com.

Good luck guys.

This is all still in the development process. Trust me, from a business standpoint, they want to know what the majority of their potential customers expect in their product. The best thing to is just give send them an email saying that you would like to see this, this, or that. As long as you don't make is sound forceful or demanding, they'll take it as helpful advice. Thank them also for taking the risk. They'll like that.
