I have about 41k miles on my car and starting last week, when i turn the steering wheel right, it squeaks. feels a tad rough too. not alot but i fear it will get worse. anyone have any idea what it is and how I can correct it? If the steering part of the warranty?

I have the same thing, only comes during winter. I think column needs lubrication but how?
Mine groans...

I used to drive a 1991 Ford Aerostar, and it got to the point where the power steering would YELL at you... It was loud too, I fear mine will turn out like that

Simple stuff first, make sure it's full, and also make sure it's not overfull; also make sure the cap is on tight. If that doesn't help, take it to the dealer (if you have the extended warrenty?) and complain and see if they fix it. If they do a fluid flush and it doesn't help, either get them to replace the thing, or if they say that it's not broken, learn to live with the sound
I've heard (ha..ha..) that Ford's power steering pumps are quite noisy, and maybe yours just forgot it was a Ford till now

What warranty did you get? The Factory warranty is up @ 36k miles, so unless you got an ESP, you don't have any warranty coverage. If you got the PremiumCare ESP then the steering wheel should be covered.

i extended it to 50k. esp. is this still bumper to bumber or is it just engine and crap?

It depends on the Level of care you got for the ESP. There are several types, and each one covers different things.

The stealership should be able to tell you what ESP plan you have. If they tell you that you have PremiumCare, then this would most definitely be covered, don't let them tell you otherwise.
Good luck.

It may not even be a Ford ESP even if you got it at a Ford dealership. It is possible it may be the dealerships own extended plan or an aftermarket plan. Until we find out which plan beonedge has, speculation about coverage is useless. I am wondering if the problem may not be in the steering column itself. Its hard for me to tell from the description.
Mine was groaning after a 250 mile trip during December. The fluid was low so I added a touch more. I haven't heard it since. I did however, hear a rubbing sound on the steering wheel in my last Gen 4. It was only in the mornings in the winter. I guess the greese just gets harder in the cold. And this is in South Florida......

I know what you mean, mine started to do that noise in the winter. I know its comming from the steering wheel underdash or in the firewall. I know its not the sterring pump. There is a rubber gasket at firewall that rubs on steering shaft. I will try to add some type of lube to it to see if thats the problem.

OK I found two Gen4 Ownere that have the same problem. Have you guys done anything to fix this? I am also positive that this not the pump. Sounds like two plastic parts rubbing each other.
i've also heard that about ford cars. about the whining noise when you turn the steering wheel. my gen3 does it in the winter and summer. whenever i turn the wheel sharp. and my levels fine.
mine does that to

I recently had a whining noise in my car and I took it into the dealership and it was the Tie Rod that had to be replaced.. no more noise.. sweet.... the dealer said it usually happens between 40,000 - 45,000.. not much you can do.. when the tie rod goes it just goes... and I have 41,000 miles on my taurus and I have a Gen 4 Taurus SE.

I get the PS pump noise only for a short time after first starting the car in extreme cold (not turning wheel, just idling after first starting). but I also get the other squeaky noise, like something rubbing, etc. - but that just started now that it is cold. So I am hoping it will just "go away" when it warms up
yeah, I'm that lazy - mainly b/c it's incredibly cold outside and I am now about to hunt down a noise with it this cold out. Plus it doesn't seem to do it much at all once the car is warmed up inside.

Your example is a different deal. The "whine" is from the power steering pump itself. It is supposed to make a noise at full lock so that you don't hold the wheel there (You will damage the pump holding the wheel full left or right). This odd sound sounds likes wet rubber squishing around. I have that same sound, and haven't tracekd it down...

that makes sense. but it also does it before i touch the wheel. like after starting the car. so i guess its 2 different things.
