What is the governed top speed on a Vulcan? I am assuming it's somewhere around 114 or so because I passed 110 and couldn't tell after that....

Well Im not pretty sure about the top speed of a Gen.3 Vulcan. I went up all they way too 110 and it didnt want to keep doing down, probably because of the speed limiter. It could go pass that limit probably without the speed limiter but not sure until where it will reach

I'm not sure if there is a difference in the stock top speed (governed) in the duratec v. the vulcan but i know the stock top speed of the tec is around 117~118.

but is that top speed with or without the limiter?

Sorry for the confusion, that is with the limiter. I had mine removed when i got my PCM reprogramed by Alberto (americanmotorsport.com) and i've had it up to around 130 since then.

Well my Merc. Sable 97 (vulcan) just reaches at 110 with the speed limiter so I guess without the limiter could reach up to 120 or 130 I guess ...

I took mine all the way to 114 within the 6 months I had my bull before the limitor kicked in. After, I installed my diablo chip and added my UDP alternator pully w/new belt, and the HighOutput alternator, I took it way past 120 in a hurry. And, it kept going. Not sure what it could've gone too, but i was too scared to take it higher than approximately 130. I was afraid of distroying something or blowing out a tire.

That was why i stopped at around 130. Still would like to take it higher since i could feel that there was more left in it before i let off but think i'd prefer to do it on a strip somewhere instead of the highway where i could get a ticket.

How are you guys coming up with 130? Am I the only one with a 120 speedo? Sure we could take a guess at how fast we're going, but guessing doesn't prove anything. And I don't really think our speedos are calibrated to give accurate readings at those speeds anyway. Maybe it's time I swapped an SHO speedo into my car.

The only thing I'm scared of at triple digit speeds is getting caught.

LOL! Yeah, I don’t want to get caught either. That’s why I don’t do it anymore. I did recently buy the Escort 8500. It's as good as the Valentine with the radar jammer. Paid $389 for it. I still don't like to take my car over 100. After 100 mph, I could lose my license and my car.

The speed gauge is designed for your bull only. If you swap a SLO gauge to a SHO gauge, it will need to be recalibrated to match, otherwise your gauges will be way off and you won’t be traveling at the same speed unless you mark on the gauges what the actual speed is.

I stated that I’ve gone faster, because the needle is past 120 mark. And, by the G forces, I really do have to guess how fast I’m going. From 110 to 120, your body can feel the difference in pull. The same goes when I’m past the 120 margin. It’s still pulling beyond 120 with the same G force resistance. When the max speed tops out, the G forces will stop pushing you will know the difference.

I have a G force counter, but I have yet to try and calculate what my actual speed is beyond 120, because I really don’t want to take it that high again. There’s no need.

The fastest I've gone is 101 on an on-ramp from Rt. 36 to Rt. 18 in Jersey. It's a long (1 mile) stretch of single lane (with wide shoulders) smooth road. Great to do high speeds on, but at the end, it's really easy for cops to hide with radar. I think the 'tec was up between 3600-4000 rpm when I had it up that high. Being that the 'tec tops at like 6000, there is plenty of room to go higher.

I can't see, however, someone going 130 in third gear. No offense Deltar, but I'm calling :bs: on that one. Your engine and your trans would be in pieces behind you on the road if you did that. If my mind serves me correctly, the only way that you'd be able to do 130 in third gear would be to accelerate until the engine is somewhere around 12,000 rpm or so. My car does 65 mph at about 4500 rpm...so unless you got a factory freak...my judgement stands...

One way to check your speed is to get a GPS. It updates once a second and at speed should be pretty accurate. I've calibrated my speedo with the GPS and it's pretty much right on target. The car I had before was about 5mph off. Of course if you guys are doing 130mph, I would advise against taking your eyes off the road to look at the GPS.

Oh, I guess the other way to do it is by looking at the RPMs of the engine and doing a straight calculation.

130 on a 'tec in 3rd seems pretty far-fetched....now, in a cobra, that's a little different, because i've seen it done w/ease :D heck, i get my mom's miata up to 80 in 3rd before i really need to shift to 4th

65 MPH at 4,600 RPMs?!! Something is very wrong with your car...I could see 130 MPH in 3rd gear. The SHO will go 140 or so MPH in 3rd gear right?

No...the SHO will NOT go 130 in third gear. That is ludicrous. There is no way that can happen. The Duratec will also not go 130 in third gear. There is also no way possible. If you can get me a video, with sound, of any Duratec (Taurus) that will go 130 in third, I will eat my hat. Until that, BS...

I was making an estimate as to my rpm level at 65 mph...I will update this thread tomorrow morning as to exactly what rpm level my car is at when I am at 65 mph. My car shifts between 20-30 from first to second, between 45-55 from second to third, and at about 65-70 from third to OD, if I'm flooring it enough to keep the shift points up.

Exactly, i estimated. As i said in my post i was "around" 130. I just made a guestimate based on the time it took the gauge to raise in increments of 10mph after around 80 till i passed 120. I'm currently looking for a gen3 sho speedo (150mph) so then i'll know for sure. Hell, for all i know i was going faster then 130 :D

And yes the main reason i didn't take it any farther then i did was i was getting worried about a possible speeding ticket since i was coming to a part in the highway where a cop could have been waiting at.
