Gasoline leak guidance

Hi,

1996 Taurus - for a few weeks there has been a fairly strong gasoline smell, particularly near the driver's rear door, but all around the car. There is no obvious leak.

I crawled under the car on the ground to get an idea of what's going on. What I saw looked like a wet tank towards the rear, but there was no true wetness or dripping. Before I jack it up, are there any obvious things to look for? There are many lines I imagine for EGR/vapor and I believe I see that the filler line comes in the rear of the tank kind of low, not at the top. Many steel lines are rusted and the rubber is very old. Do any of those typically leak that I should be focusing on? Is it likely the tank rusting out?

A year ago, I replaced the fuel filter and EGR and cleaned the EGR ports, so I don't see any contribution of those factors.

Inside or outside?
If it is inside it might be a leak near the fuel rail (that feeds the injectors) with gas fumes blown into the passenger compartment by the A/C.
Perhaps you could drive around with the fuel cap off or lose to check whether the EVAP leak detection works. The CEL should light up after some time.
What will that indicate?
I'd say that indicates it is not a leak in the EVAP system (that recirculates fuel vapors from the tank back to the engine). And also not a leak in the fuel filler neck (I had mine replaced because it looked so awful it seemed 10 years older than the car itself and the state inspection warned me about it).

PIc my '01. So by the date on this, 9 years old and it failed.
Worth a look under there.

Thanks guys.

Is that visible if I pull the tire or how do I get to it?
Could be rot on the top of the tank. Do you live in a salt zone?
Yes - Jersey.
How do I find out "easily" w/o dropping the tank?

Leak above the liquid level will set a vapor code.

You might think, but I got a small leak code when my filler neck had a hole in it. Same with a faulty gas cap.
The vapor codes are 'small evap leak' & 'large evap leak'
My filler neck set a P0442 code while my gas tank leak didn't set a code. My leak was on the upper tank piece right below the filler rubber hose. The inside of the tank showed a lot of rust spots leading to potential leaks.
