So, my autodimming mirror with compass came today in the mail. Perfect weather to be outside, so I decided to install it. I have an auto dim already, but with the 04-07 the message center you can only have temperature OR compass, so with this I figured I can have both. It came out of a 02 Sable. Perfect. I get the other mirror all ready, and unplug mine from the harness. I go to take the mirror off. No big deal right? you just slide it up right? Well it was being a stubborn sob. I put a little upward force, and it came loose! Then i heard a weird sound, and open my eyes. OH COOL.

So now I need to get a new windshield. Has anyone seen this happen before? I've seen glass crack, but never peel or "chip" like this from the inside...

ugh.

Yup, looks like a new windshield. For future reference, the mirror doesn't just slide up, you have to insert a small screwdriver in that slot in the top and pry the windshield away from the base. It's held on by a spring clip.

Ford went so far with their de-contenting, they actually reduced the number of glass molecules per square inch by 50%, and saved $10 whole dollars!

that sucks. at least for now it doesn't look like it went completely through. Depending on your insurance you might be able to get it replaced for free. I know geico does it.

We did that on my moms cutlass supreme, except a week later on some really rough roads, the windshield cracked from the middle down to the missing chunk.
