Has anyone done this mod. I wanna make flames come out of my exhaust and I wanna scare the poopies out of people behind me. Can someone please give me some tips or instructions. Thank you.

Drill a hole in the exhaust pipe and install a spark plug there. Then wire up the spark plug to a push-button switch so that you can activate it in the cabin. It should light up the unburnt gases that goes out the exhaust.
That works well on older cars that run rich at idle, but not as well with late model effecient fuel injected catalytic convertor cars (unless they are modified).

There are kits available that inject propane into the tail pipe and use the spark plug method to ingite the gas. Those can blow some REAL FLAMES.

Just curious, would you have to wire up a coil to fire the spark plug, or maybe just a big capacitor? I dont think that running 12v straight from the battery would fire the plug. Any thoughts?

Correct, you need around 3kV (3000 volts) per mm to make a spark in air. That's about 76V per mils of spark gap. You'll need a coil. A capacitor allows you to store charge, but not to change the voltage.
as far as I know you can't just use a plug in any car with cats, the only solution is a propane system, I'm sure there are some online. if you do get around to doing it, be sure to post a write up!
Also, you'd better watch out - Flame throwers are NOT street legal and if you throw flames on another person's car , be ready to pay for all the damages you have caused.

Ok, thank you for all of your help. Where do I find a coil that can make enough power for my spark plug...what I was also thinkin was use one of those gas grill lighter things and cut the wires and make them longer to go to my cabin. But if I figure out where to find a coil, I will use the spark plug.
How about a front mounted flamethrower...It would work much better than beeping the horn.

"You cut me off!!" *tries to find horn but finds frontal mounted flame thrower switch instead* -WOOOSH- (flames go onto the car's gas tank and the car blows up) "oops."

Hows that for road rage???

A piezo ignition system only fires a spark for a short time. I would think that you would want a more constant ignition.
I dont know much about the flame thrower, but ya should have the power to back it up.

yeah, the piezo would only have a short spark duration.
BUT, look at the piezo ignition system on a grill. there is one spark to set it off, then the flames that are already there ignite the gas coming out. so depending on the flow of the gasses out of the exhaust, how much of it is still flamable, the piezo might work. besides, that would be much easier than wiring a spark plug up. but if you MUST do that, you could always disable one of your cylinders, get a really long plug wire and route that to the exhaust. might not be the best thing for your engine though...
but the unburnt gas going through your exhaust should be enough to get a decent flame. (i think)
just be careful.
I don't think that any unburned gas will get past your cats. this is something that you could go to old cars that you can't do anymore, not by igniting fuel. the catatlytic converters will not allow any unburned fuel to escape, not to mention that should any unburned fuel get that far down the exhaust it will damage the catalytic converters, so the computer is well designed to prevent any fuel from exiting the engine unburned, the EPA will make sure of that.

I'm pretty sure that this would not be street legal. Probably highly illegal to burn up some pedestrians walking behind you.

Anyway, I think I saw this on some show and they were just injecting gasoline into the exhaust and then igniting it with a spark plug. Looked cool, but again, not street legal.
Here is the kit I looked at a while back. I have no intention of actually using one though.

You're right - they are 100% illegal. I wouldn't suggest doing that mod

And the program you saw it on was probably "Pimp my ride" hosted by Xzibit on MTV. They worked on an older mustang ('67? called 'Maddie Mustang') where they painted it blue, and installed a tv, dvd player, CD player, system... They redid the whole thing. The mustang looked great after they did it - the pony was ready to run again! However, they're all rice.

I did put a flame thrower exhaust on my 93 Flareside and it worked purty good even with the cats and fuel injection! This is what I did...
Get a Switch that when flipped turns off one side and turns on the other side and wire it into the positive side of the coil (going on memory here but I think it was the positive side
) so when flipped on it sends power to a second coil at the back of the car and turns off the engines coil this also gives all the pulses to the second coil to fire the spark plug in the exhaust. wire the coil in the back directly to the spark plug that you put in the exhaust. You may want to play with the distance that you put the spark plug in the end of the tailpipe but with my truck 7 or 8 inches was the sweet spot! (tailpipe in the truck was 4")
This doesn't produce the yellow flame that you see in movies or stuff but does make a real real hot BLUE flame about 3 to 5 feet long!!! when you want flames rev up the engine and flip the switch...hold your foot to the floor on the gas to get the flames (dumps gas into the engine and out the exhaust nicely vaporized too!) if you let off the gas to soon or don't hit the gas you can expect the biggest BANG that you will ever experience in your cars life.(one hell of a backfire!!) The trick here is to have the car at least coasting down the road so it wont stall out or to flip the switch back to the engine so the engine will stay running!
GOOD LUCK (and if you get in crap or burn yourself or your car your on your own!!) I accept no responsibility for your actions
