My 97 Taurus GL(Vulcan) has began to make alot of noise. I have checked the oil and tranny fluid levels and they are fine. The car currently has 60,000 miles . It sounds like a loud droning sound coming from the engine compartment when the car reaches 50-60mph. Any ideas????

The RPMS are in the 2000-2500 range but I'm only counting 3 gear changes , with no 4 th gear? As far as the noise it sounds like a loud humming noise, like tire noise or a hole in a pipe. I have cheched all pipes and there is no holes. The actual sound seems to be in the engine compartment on the drivers side.

i guessing it might be a wheel bearing or possible tire related problem. Have the tires road force balanced and see if that fixes anything. Could also be tranny related.

My guess is wheel bearing..... take it out for a drive of about 10 miles and then pull over and feel the sides of your tires and wheels. Whatever one is hot to touch is the bad side. You can also check by pulling on the tire and wheel and see if there is any in and out play.

Well it turned out the noise I was hearing was the wheel bearing on the drivers side. Thanks to Tman and 00Taurus for setting me on the right course. I got it fixed today , it seems the Taurus has a sealed bearing and it comes as part of the whole hub assembly. The car feels like new again. Thanks again. :D
