I check the fluids weekly, monitor my 94GL wagon constantly for noises, and maintain well in advance. We'll be driving the freeway, not under extreme load and the check engine light will come on at will. No issues, starts fine, runs fine.

Should the car be checked by a mechanic with a computer each time this happens?

Is it inexpensive to run the codes? I'm not into ignoring signs but like any good idiot light the parking brake will stick on, then go away. I get my 5 sequence air bag light every 3k miles.

If you have a local Autozone Store, they can run the codes for you for free.

AZ will not check pre-OBDII cars, but you can using a paper clip.

The won't run the codes on a 94?

no, AZ won't check codes on a 94, i think it is 96 or later. for the check
engine lite, the first thing i do is run a can of chevron-techron thru the
gas tank, often it will turn lite out, second choice is take off EGR valve
and clean it and put back on and see if lite goes out, or check gas cap
see if it's tight fit-or the gasket.

thanks healthcoach dave! I respect the idiot light, but your call could be right on. I had filled the tank an hour before! What does Chevron Techron do for the light/engine?

Can codes be retrieved from months back? Asking because my mechanic swears he found old codes...
