the brake light, which goes on when you apply the e-brake started only illuminating intermittently, but now will not illuminate at all.

It is not the bulb. Is there a switch or something I can clean or replace? Is it under the dash?

If not, what triggers the light to illuminate?

Press the p-brake down and look at where the rubber bump stop hits. You should see a spring loaded switch. Get some lube on that switch, work it in, and see if that fixes it. Mine does this occasionally too.
