Dual Flowmasters

Just replaced the crappy rotted out replacement mufflers on my SHO with Flowmaster 40s and the sound is amazing. What is more amazing is that 3.0 of displacement on a DOHC engine makes so much more sound then on a OHV engine.

Right after I got them on I went out for a ride and pulled up beside these guys in a lawn care pickup and I was reving it and the guy was looking over like what the ....
then he rolled down his window to hear it. (It was pouring down torrentialy)

I has been raining all day so I haven't been able to get out and really let the car loose but the old ones were plugged up pretty good I can really feel the power increase just crusing around in the rain. Dry pavement should tell a whole other story.

That's cool... I'm lovin' the flowmaster on my vulcan.

Wow, that's weird. I have a single 2.5" catback with a FM 40 series deltaflow, and it sounds great at idle, but it gets pretty raspy in the mid range RPMs.

yeah I got the 40s on my 98 Sable Duratec... not the Deltas, but TRUE 40 Series! They sound good. I like em, and yes you can feel the power increase with the 40s on there. Just thought i would add in my two cents

Mike,

You should install a good resinator between the cats and the muffs. That should keep the deep growl, but eliminate the rasp. That's the way I have my flowmasters set up on my '00. It sounds good, except something is loose in the exhaust and causes a rattle at varried RPM levels. ....I really need to get that fixed....

I'm guessing you guys all have resonators.
Yup, I do.

The more I read about Flowmaster 40's on a Duratech on this forum the more confused I get. I really wanted to add a FM 40 on my 01 'tec to get the dual exhaust look (leaving the stock muffler as one of them).

However, in doing research, I found many people saying that the 'tec just does not sound good with a FM 40 and that I may want to consider a FM 50 instead. They said that while the Vulcan sounds pretty good, the 'tec just sounds strange.

Comments? Any audio clips from any of you 'tec + FM 40 guys?
Umm, just adding a flowmaster while keeping a stock muffler just to get the dual look would be pretty screwed up. Not only would it look tacky, but the flow would be uneven and may actually make your car slower.

If you want two flowmaster 40's for dual exhaust then either keep the stock resonator, or buy the longest resonator that will fit under your car. Mine just sounds goofy because I got all new pipes and didn't put in resonator to replace the stock one that I had removed.

Just get a really long resonator and the 40 will sound good.

Not sure how much it helps, but here's a sound clip of my vulcan w/ the FM 40 DeltaFlow.

Hey jason do you have duals? I have a 01 gen 4 vulcan, and I saw a nice price for the flowmaster 40, but will it sound alrightif i don't go dual and just swap out the factory muffler?

I just have a single exhaust - and that's exactly what I did - just replaced the factory muffler with the FM and left the factory resonator intact - and that clip is the result and I'm happy with it.

Hey Patrick - any way you can get a sound clip?
I got mine by putting my laptop on the ground behind my car with the windows sound recorder on, lol.

When my gf's dad moves into his new house and gets his garage set up, he and I are putting some new stuff on the Sable. I'm going to break the exhaust pipe off right behind the flex pipe and build a custom Y pipe, then add two high flow cats, and bring it all back to two Flowmaster 40 series mufflers. I may or may not go with resonators. Of course, my budget is limited, so if it comes to be too expensive to do what I want, I'll probably just hack it off above the stock cat, put a single high flow in, remove the resonator, and then put in dual FM 40's...

**EDIT** It should be done by July at the latest, so when it is, I'll get a decent sound clip of it. I also have the Duratec, so we'll see how good it sounds...

How's that? I would add the FM to the other side and from what I've seen the appearance form the tail-end of the car is the same. I would have stock muffler on left and FM on the right. And the difference in pressure should not do anything as it is coming off the same single pipe into a T-pipe right before the gas-tank. If anything.. more exhaust will come out the FM and that's it.

Just FYI - I wouldn't recommend removing the resonator from a Duratec after hearing Twilight's (Alex) straight piped. Duratec's sound like
with no resonator generally.

I was planning on replacing my stock mufflers with two FM 40's (original not delta). In the process of doing so i had planned on replacing the stock Y pipe with a custom one that goes from the stock 1.75" to 2.25" and attaching it just after the stock resonator.

Will leaving the stock resonator be as good as replacing it with a longer resonator as Mike suggested? If not, would it be best to get a 2.25" resonator instead of the stock 1.75" size or will it not really make a difference? Just trying to figure out what point is too far (not worth the money spent) versus actually getting something worth the money spent.

I would try but any other time it ended in a frustrating and unsatisfying time. I have this stupid capture device so I can get video from my camcorder to my computer but for some reason it won't capture sound. I gave up because it was making me insane. I might give it a try later but don't count on it. Sound clips never do exhaust justice anyways. You want to hear it wait until ROTB I hope to be there then everyone can hear it.

I see - I hate it when stuff doesn't work right like that. I agree with you that the sounds clips don't really do it justice - but enough to get an idea.
Hope to hear it ROTB if not sooner then.
