Replaced my PCV valve and hose today in my Duratec 2000. Typical hole in the PCV hose. Codes P0171 and P0174.

I noticed that when I had the air intake apart the air throttle/butterfly valve (... help me here ... what IS IT called?) just before the air manifold was quite oily/gummed up/ black stuff. See picture.

Is that normal after 76,000 miles ?

Should I clean it ? How ?

Will it affect millage/performace ?

You can use a spray throttle body cleaner. Look at the label to ensure that the spray is safe for Teflon coated parts. Don't the spray on any painted parts, because it can remove or soften the paint.

It is called a throttle body and yes it is normal.

As Bob suggested throttle body or carb cleaner should work.
