Hi Everyone,

I was looking for advice on coolant. I have a 03 SES with 63k miles that has never had it's coolant changed to my knowledge. Today, I noticed it was below the cool fill level and I can see brown slug caked onto the side walls of the bottle.

The manual says yellow coolant, but I don't know where to get that besides the dealership. What coolant should I use? What is the change interval on the original coolant

I was thinking about just adding water until I could see the color, then doing the voltage test for acidity and specific density (eye dropper and balls) to temp range. Depending on what happens there I was going to add, change or flush coolant.

What are your opinions?

I found that most Napa parts stores carry the yellow colored coolant that our cars use, Zerex makes it, Napa part # ZRX ZXG05, Zerex G05F. They also carry the red colored coolant Chrysler uses (the same stuff, just red in color). I would look up reverse flushing the heater core on the topic finder, since you never changed the coolant on this car before. Debris builds up inside the heater cores, esp on the Vulcan engines. You want to flush out the system really good before putting new coolant in.

Might as well flush it. Easy way to do it is: pull the lower radiator hose and drain as much as possible; fill the radiator with water and 1 bottle of radiator flush; run the car at operating temperature for 1 hour or couple of days; pull the hose again and drain; fill with water one more time and run and drain; now your system should be pretty clean. Fill with zerex G05 (or green stuff...)... make sure it's 50/50 mixed with distilled water if the stuff is originally 100%.

Flush it good, especially if it's a Vulcan.

Thanks for everyone that has weighted in.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I have three options of flushing:
1) Have a shop do it
2) At home w/ a hose and flush kit
3) At home wo/ a hose flush kit

I'm leaning towards options 2 or 3. Since I have neglected it I want to do the most t horough job wo/ dropping a lot of cash. What is recommended?

For options 2 & 3, to take the lower radiator hose off, do I need to jack up the car?

For option 3: How big of a bucket do I need? Must I really run my car for an hour for it work? I thought the flush kits said 15 minutes?
