2000 Taurus, 72000 miles, 3.0 V6 automatic, (Vulcan?). SES light came on today, code shown is P0136, O2 sensor downstream? Any thing else to check before I take it in to have the sensor replaced? What else could cause that code? I do not have the money to throw at this beast. Any suggestions?
Will I cause any damage by ignoring this malfunction?

Well it seems that the computer thinks somethng is wrong with Bank-1, O2 sensor #2's Circuit, not necessarily the O2 sensor itself. So maybe check the wiring & electrical connector to that O2 sensor. Look for damged, bent, pushed back, or corroded connector pins or sockets, or damaged wiring or insulation.

Since it's the after cat sensor & is measuring the cats efficiency, it's not as important to the engines health as sensor one in that bank would be.
