Hello all,

Today, I drove up to the airport to pick up my mom and on the way home, while cruising at about 70 mph the "check transmission" light came on. There were no clunks, bangs, etc. It seemed to be driving just fine. I was close enough to home that I decided to see if it would make it.

After exiting the expressway, the downshifts were fine. Taking off from a stop there was a hard shift into second and another hard into third. Fourth seemed the most normal of them all, although there seemed to be a ting of something wrong with it to.

Once it shifted hard the car drove fine, there is no slipping, etc. Just the two hard shifts.

I've been reading and it seems like the most likely culprit is the VSS? Anyone agree? The speedo is working fine. I also dropped the pan and changed the filter and fluid(This was done about three weeks ago), and did a progressive change out about 1k mile later. Currently, the fluid is just a tad over full and red. Doesn't smell burnt either.

Any help is appreciated. I knew that buying this car with 191k on it was a gamble, but for the deal I got, I'll still be ahead if I have to have the trans rebuilt (which is what I'm NOT hoping for)

So this morning I took the car over to a local trans shop and the guy put his scanner on it. There were three codes present:

1. P0960 - Pressure Control Solenoid A Control Circuit/Open
2. P0962 - Pressure Control Solenoid "A" Control Circuit Low
3. P1744 - Torque Converter Clutch System Performance

The transmission is the AX4N Metric.

Any clue on what to look for?

solved!

So Tuesday, I took the car over to Express Transmission in Holland, OH. (I highly recommend them, very honest, personable, and great service/prices!)

They called this morning to tell me that my car was done. Turns out the A/C line had rubbed through a wire harness. Just so happens that the three wires that were rubbed through were for the transmission, more specifically the PCS. They repaired the wires and said that the shifting problems went away!

I skated out of needing a rebuild! :)

One other question though, cause we never want to have transmission problems, are you keeping on top of your fluid and filter changes?
Absolutely! I bought the car with 191k on it. It now has a little over 193K on it. Before I even starting driving it, I dropped the trans pan and replaced the filter and added new fluid. Knowing that dirty fluid was being held in the TC, about a 1k miles later I used a small hand held pump and sucked all of the fluid that I could out through the dipstick tube. Added another five quarts of Mercon V. I'm not a fan of taking off a tranny line and pumping it out..

I plan to repeat this process every third oil change to keep the fluid looking like new.

Along with changing the trans fluid, I also changed the oil and changed the coolant with new extended life.

All I can say is that I love this car!

That is so funny cause I just had the same problem with my bull. Its a 2005 Taurus with 190K on the engine. Bought it used in Nov and put 3.5K on it. The Check Transmission light came on after 1 hour worth of driving around and was on the highway doing 65-70MPH. I just hit the reset and cleared it as there was no noise, or anything that made me think that something was going on.

I noticed that my engine mounts are a little loose from doing the REV test in DRIVE with my foot on the break, used a vid cam to watch.

Checked all the engine codes with my scanner and nothing...... So I will do more visual checks like BobbyOrange did and maybe find some wiring that was contaminated???

Anyone else have ideas?

Where are these wires that get rubbed through? My bull is throwing the check trans message all the time now, it has gone from very infrequent to all the time over the course of this year. Scanned for codes and there werent any? Ive had it scanned by 2 different shops with 2 different types of scanners, with no codes showing. Maybe i need to just take it to a trans shop and see what they say, just not interested in a rebuild as it shifts fine and no slipping felt.

I just got this "check transmission" message on by dashboard today. 2006 Taurus, 181K miles. When I check for fault codes, it says there are none. Low trans fluid maybe?
