Hey can anybody help me on a check engine light code P0401 on a 01 Sable w/ 58k miles. Autozone gave me the code. And I have read about the DPFE sensor which seems like I cannot find in this 3.0 V6. 24 valve compartment. I check for air leaks but, don't know whats norm air noise or abnorm. This vehicle is new 2 me but, I not afraid off getting my hands in there. Please give me some feed back I'm about to go to the dealer txs

Don't go to the dealer, the DPFE sensor is in a hiding place but it isn't that hard to replace. On the Duratec, it's located against the block underneath the throttle body. I had mine replaced by a mechanic, but the best way to get to it is to

a ) take off the intake hose
B ) disconnect the throttle body
c ) replace the DPFE sensor (you'll know what it looks like from your replacement)

And, if you're not sure it's the DPFE sensor, I bet you dollars to dozens it is. I replaced my whole EGR system with the DPFE sensor last before it fixed my CEL. The DPFE seems like the most problematic part on the taurus.

If you look for it and can't find it, I can take my accordion off tommorrow and get you some pictures, if you need. It really isn't that hard to get to once you disconnect the TB, though.

NO NO, go to the dealer.
There's a TSB issued on the DPSE and it now has an extended warranty. I got mine changed for FREE this morning. :jump_with_joy:

You will probably want to point out that there's a TSB and that you expect it'll be free.
Thanks folks ya know ya right on both parts I went to the dealer this afternoon and found out that this is the 3rd gen of this part.. DPFE sensor is now covered under a extended coverage.. Kool

How long is the extended warranty?
I don't know.

I was going to ask when I picked it up, but then we changed plans and my wife picked it up and she doesn't care.

Does anybody know if the TSB is still good? My 2001 Vulcan just blew the P0401 code - EGR Flow Insufficient. I have 45k miles. Thanks guys! :)
From what I heard in another post very recently, the part is covered for 24 months, or 24k extra on the regular warranty, whichever comes first. Translating into 36,000=24,000=60,000, thats at least what I heard.

Yay! Just called the stealership and gave them my VIN and they said my car is covered under the TSB!! Getting it fixed for free today! That makes me happy!! It's the first problem I've had with the car and it was already a known issue and they're fixing it! :chili:

This just made my day! :D

Yay! It's fixed - they did it in about 45 minutes, too! B)
Not every Taurus is covered. Depends on your VIN. Mine wasn't covered. Ic alled Ford and Dealer, both said the same thing... :(

I would call the Ford Customer Relations Center and complain just to see if they will cover it or reimburse you. Just point out that it's a known issue and that yours failed and should be included... I can give you the "authorization codes" and stuff that were on my paperwork...

The program# for replacing the faulty sensors is 02M01. It seems to cover most Taurus from 2000 and 2001. The extended warranty is an extra 2 years or 24,000 miles above the original bumper to bumper warranty. I would recomend calling ahead to the dealer to verify your car is covered if you didn't receive a letter.
You dont have to dissasemble anything to replace the DPFE sensor. If you look between the upper intake and the windshield cowl you will see the DPFE sensor. It has an electrical socket going into it and 2 vaccum lines. Just pull off the vaccum lines and disconnect the electrical connection. If you have skinny arms it makes it alot easier. The replacement sensor is like $50 from AutoZone or $70 from your dealer. I replaced mine at about 40k miles because it was setting the same code; 0401. 6 months later I found out there is a recall on the sensor and I got my money back. B)
