If the cotter pin hole didn't line up with the nut, what do I do? Tighten or loosen?

Where is this castellated nut and cotter pin located? I can't find either in my 04 service manual.

Thanks for your replies. I don't remember if I put a locking nut (continuously increasing torque) or a C nut when I replaced a ball joint on my 05 Taurus, but my question was general.

In general, I second godspunk - go a little tighter.

Unless you already went over torque with a beam-type torque wrench.

In reality, tighter or looser isn't going to be that big of a deal, just as long as you're close to the range of torque specifications for the nut itself. The cotter pin will give additional support, if you have to loosen it.
