'99 Ford Taurus Sedan, Vulcan engine, 85k miles.

OK, for the last couple of days the drive belt has been making a squeal. A visual inspection showed the belt was going bad and I was planning to replace it tomorrow.

Today I spent a lot of time driving with the AC on. When I got home I turned off the car for about an hour and then had to go out again, but now the car won't start, just makes a loud and fast click-click-click-click and the time has reset to 12:00. Wipers/lights work.

So is it the battery, or possibly is the belt squeak coming from a failing alternator?

Sounds like your battery is dead from the alternator not charging due to a slipping belt

Thanks 62. I slow charged the battery overnight and just replaced the belt with a Napa Auto Parts one. The car is running and the squeak is gone so I think everything is ok! Will be replacing the battery soon (it's old and barely got through last winter).

Thanks again!
