I had 6 keys that worked. Now I am down to one. You need to get it reprogrammed, as do I. Sometimes the remote start causes the keys to lose their programming, while the remote start has no problem linking up still.

What brand remote starter?

Thank you for your reply. Remote starter brand is Astro. My remote starter and key used to work very well. But recently I found my key sometimes work, other times not. If I start with the remote starter and drive for a couple of minutes then the key can start the car. Do you also have the same problem?

Different brand..

But My problem is similar. If I turn on the car starter, I can then put a dead key in with it started and drive no problem. If I turn off the car, it won't restart the car unless it is the one remaining good key. But yes, your car starter just has a bypass on it since these keys have the microchips in them. The bypass and the microchips are not lining up somehow. They both must be the same to communicate with the computer. I imagine if you put the key in, your theft light blinks and as you said nothing happens.

Do you know what kind of bypass system you have? There are two types, the one you install a key into and one you just program and connect to the computer. Did you install it yourself? I installed three remote starts on taurus, but they were all with the one that uses a key.

You can take it back to the installer for him to correct. If that is not an option then my guess is that the remote start continues to energizes the computer with its code and the PCM can't deal with two codes at once. Try pulling the fuse on the power for the remote start to see if corrects the problem.

There is no way you should not get the car to crank with your key even if it won't run. The way the remote starts woork is that they inject 12 volts to the start on the starter selenod wire. That wire is not cut just tapped into so the ignition switch if good should work.

I have a 2001 Taurus SEL DURATECH It had a VALET 561T and 556U installed in 06 thi unit still works great today in Jan 2022 the 556U uses a key so you have to lose a key back the day there wasn’t a lot of options. This unit would not start with the key due to the installer didn’t put the over ride toggle switch in or the push button program switch. But today you or the can put switch in and shut down the transponder with key the car starts fine you can now buy a unit that decodes the keys off the internet and it will work with any unit even my that’s 15 years old. There is a MPC REMOTE START that you just program for key over ride it’s a 170 bucks on Amazon. It’s for 2000-2007 Taurus and is made to kinda plug and play but you still have to tap in to the harness. I know this is old thread but I had to get my 2 cents in , so if you install one make sure you put over ride in and you’ll be able to use the key I have done this yet but I’m getting ready to upgrade to unit that rolls windows up and option for beating the kids and kicking the dog. Love the dogs the kids not so much ….
