Cai For A Gen 4

I was at AutoZone this weekend and had a K&N filter that was 11" long with a 3.5" opening. Is there room in the fender for a filter this long?

Yes, but you'd need to be pushing 900HP to require it. Even the smallest K&N cone available will breathe more air than any n/a Taurus could ever use.
Well, I just turbo-nitroused the all mountain motor with a Type-R sticker and figure I'm pushing close to 1000hp!

But seriously, I know it will breathe better, but will it breathe enough?

I use a 7" k&n cone in my fenderwell cai. I relocated my horns to the bottom of the bumper for my first cai, but even with the horns on the bottom, the 7" fits great. If you simply had to have a gi-normous cone filter in there, i say go with a k&n 9" cone with a 3" opening. But like the others have said, you dont need a filter quite that huge for the Taurus.
