2000 dohc. My ac clutch is trying to engage but is not engaging fully. Air worked fine last week - not working this week. Compressor spins fine. I'm hoping the gap just widened up too much to engage and I need to put some new shims in.

One way to test is when its trying to engage, poke it with a broom stick. If it pulls in, youve got an air gap (shim) problem.

Maybe not such a good idea. It has the three metal pieces on it that stick out the spinning end and no room for a strike near the center of the clutch.

I know the coil is working so I think I'll just replace the clutch and put new shims in with the correct gap. It has 162k on it.

Sure you can measure the air gap.
It's the space between the outer part of the clutch and the pulley where the belt is.
Feeler gauge into the gap, I got another 20k miles out of mine by pulling out the shim until the compressor gave up at 191k.
Broomstick just needs to push the clutch at any location not just the center to help nudge it in.
