I was under my Sable planning my attack on flushing the trans for when I get home for X-mas break, and I noticed that this part [attachmentid=23135]of the exhaust was damaged. The "slinky" cover piece has broken at the front and moves back'n'forth. My concern is that something might puncture the accordion looking part under it. But the part is $120. Is this a big deal or is there some kind of exhaust bandage that will protect it.

What does this part even do? Does it just allow for movement in the exhaust?

I put a hose clamp on my slinky and it's been like that for two years. You can get them online for about $30. But they usually don't have the flanges.
