On my girlfriends '01 Taurus, the Brake Light in the dash comes on when it wants to. What is causing this? I am gonna check the fluid tomorrow. I'm thinking it needs new rear shoes as the pads in the front aren't that old but I will check them also. What else could be going on?

Low fluid in the brake master cylinder 'cause the rear shoes are worn way down and the fluid is in the rear wheel cylinders to compensate.

Thanks. When she gets back from class, I'm gonna check it for her.

Low fluid or e-brake not fully released are the 2 things that will cause the red brake light to illuminate.

I put some fluid in and on the drive home we had no light. Over Christmas brake I am gonna change her shoes on the back and inspect the pads up front.

Flush that old nasty fluid out if you can also, it will be worth it since your already down there.
