I did some research on this but nothing 100% matched what is happening with my 96 Taurus. I'm trying to see if the problem might be able to be fixed without having to pull the trans.

It shifts hard between 1st and 2nd with a clunk sound. It also shifts late sometimes if I drive real light. Sometimes it shifts good but there is usually a hard clunking shift. All other gears are fine. There is also a series of beeps when I start my car. There is a 5 beep sequence that occurs 5 times right after starting the car. I can't take it to aamco til Monday and was hoping to get some idea before then.

Internal or external problem, any ideas?

Possible VSS or TPS problem. A scan tool that can read and preferably graph TPS and VSS PIDs might help narrow down the problem.
