Logically, it seems that it could filter out metal scrappings before they get into the filter. But it looks more like a gimmick. if the metal gets into your oil filter, well thats what the oil filter is for. so it seems pretty pointless needless to say.

maybe it helps it by not cloggin up the oil filter, if thats clogged, ur not gettin any oil, and ur motor gets lodged

That's the idea. I'm not sure which way to go on this one... sounds awfully gimmicky. The regular Magnefines on the PS & tranny lines are NOT a gimmick though--especially considering Ford's tendency to underestimate the need for filters on the PS & tranny.
